How I Use the Skills of Critical Thinking By Srimanasa Nagabhyiru Critical thinking is a skill that plays a prominent role in how we make decisions. Using critical thinking allows us to assess arguments, make educated judgments, and identify information. This essay discusses a
concrete example of critical thinking and how it is implemented in the real world to make a rational decision. As a senior, I had to choose which college to attend after graduation. I received multiple acceptances with different criteria for academics and social life. This was where I had to apply my skills to make the right decision. The first skill I used was researching each college and identifying their academic programs, location, scholarships, tuition, and campus culture. With that in mind, I was analytical about factors such as reputation, distance, and career choices presented to me. With research and analysis, I had to decide what college best fit me. At first, I chose healthcare administration as my major, but several doubts allowed me to change course and find an interest in Computer Science and Finance. I was able to problem-solve and adapt to new circumstances. With all these skills intact, I could interact with college advisors and family members about my decision and why I thought it was a wise choice. I needed to communicate my decisions so that my family members and college advisors were up to date. The skills used were researching, analyzing, decision-making, problem-solving, and communicating. All necessary skills were needed for me to make a rational decision. Without each step, it would have been difficult to come up with a proper solution. With these skills, it is the best way to solve a real-world problem. The research skills required to research colleges are academic programs, extracurricular opportunities, and campus facilities. With these analytical skills, I can make a pros and cons list and determine which fit is best for me. My decision-
making skills come into play when thinking about what is best for me. Problem-solving is the best way to identify what decision to make by looking at the problem. In this context, problem-solving can be used to look for solutions to pay for tuition with financial aid or scholarships. Allowing for problem-solving leads
to communicating with family members and college advisors to allow guidance and provide valuable perspectives. Critical thinking is an important skill to make educated decisions to shape our future. With my example, such decisions made in the process play a huge role in our future and exemplify primary skills used in critical thinking such as researching, analyzing, decision-making, problem-solving, and communicating. Critical thinking allows us to navigate through being independent and reliant. It is prominent in everyone’s life for making rational decisions that align with our values and aspirations. With these critical
thinking skills, I am better equipped to face the challenges presented to me in the future so that I can pursue a successful life taking each problem that comes my way into a learning experience.
