After reading chapters 1 and 8 in The Ethical Life respond to the following prompts. To receive
full credit, you must respond to all of the prompts accurately and completely. I grade the answers
based on the material in the assigned reading. Your answers need to present an accurate
understanding of the content found in The Ethical Life, not what is in The Fundamentals of
Ethics or on the Internet. If you choose to use outside sources to help answer the questions, you
must cite them. Additionally, you need to use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation in your
answers. Having excessive grammatical or typographical errors will lower your grade. Please
number your answers based on the numbering in the actual assignment. I have included an
assignment template to help with this. See the note below. You may write your answers as a
paragraph or as bullets. The key is to answer the questions accurately and completely. There is
not a set length for the answers, but, in general, a good answer for each question should amount
to a small paragraph.
The questions from chapters 1 & 8
1.
In chapter 1 on page 12 in
The Ethical Life
, Mill says that utilitarianism has often been
criticized by calling it "a doctrine worthy only of swine." Explain the meaning of this
criticism.
2.
In chapter 1 on pages 12-15, Mill addresses this criticism. Explain Mill's response to the
criticism that utilitarianism is a "doctrine worthy only of swine." (Note: Mill addresses
this throughout pages 12-15. Your answer should reflect what Mill actually says in this
entire section.)
3.
Create an example that illustrates the distinction that Mill makes in answering the
criticism that utilitarianism is "a doctrine only of swine." (Note: I am not asking for an
example from the text or Internet. The best answers will be ones that express Mill's ideas
in your own example and words.)
4.
In chapter 8 on page 98-99 in
The Ethical Life
, Mill addresses the connection between
individual happiness and collective happiness. Explain Mill's approach to individual and
collective happiness found on those pages.
5.
In chapter 8 on pages 102-103, Mill addresses the criticism that utilitarianism is often
given the name of Expediency. Explain what the criticism means by Expediency and
explain Mill's response to the criticism as found on pages 102-103.
