Case 10 Questioning Questions Questions for Self-Reflection or Group Discussion 1. In your opinion, what exactly was the bias underlying the extensive questioning of Sophia compares to Jim that Bob noticed? The executives were unfairly questioning Sophia's abilities more than Jim's. This unfair treatment was likely because Sophia is a Hispanic woman, which means she faced biases due to both her gender and ethnicity. They doubted her skills, assuming she might be less capable than Jim because of her background. As a result, she had to prove herself more than her male colleague. 2. To what extent do you think the extensive questioning of Sophia by the executives resolved their bias with respect to Sophia, permanently versus temporarily? Why? The executives' constant questioning might have made them see Sophia's skills temporarily. But biases are strong and often don't change quickly. If Sophia keeps doing well, they might trust her eventually. But if the biases aren't dealt with, they could come back in the future. 3. Why do you think Sophia did not want to acknowledge to Bob that she was well aware of the bias that the executives had with respect to her? Do you think she should have acknowledged that she was aware? Why or why not? Sophia might not have talked to Bob about the bias for a few reasons. First, it could have made Bob uncomfortable or changed how they work together. Second, Sophia wanted to act professionally and not seem confrontational. She might have also worried that talking about bias could make her seem like a victim, which might hurt her professional reputation. Whether she should have talked about it depends on how comfortable she felt and her relationship with Bob. 4. In your opinion, what should executives of Sophia’s clients do differently when they interact with Sophia next time? Why?
The client bosses need to be fair and treat Sophia just like they treat her male colleagues. They should respect her skills and not doubt her because she's a woman or Hispanic. Making a friendly and inclusive atmosphere will help everyone work well together, no matter their gender or background. 5. What other points would you like to reflect on or discuss from the case or from the professionals’ perspective? This situation shows how women, especially women of color, often face unfair treatment at work. It's a sign that we really need to make workplaces more diverse and inclusive. We can do this by teaching people about biases, having mentors to help, and creating safe spaces to talk about these issues. Companies need to have rules that treat everyone equally and fairly. It's also important for coworkers and mentors to support each other, like how Bob supported Sophia. Everyone—people, companies, and society—needs to work together to fix these unfair biases.
