Spiritual Life Reflective Essay By: Connor Kail Spiritual life is essential to one’s well-being. In the past few years, the world has experienced things like never before and due to the uncertainty that always seems to be facing us in today‘s world, spirituality and religion have become even more important in my life. I became a Christian when I was very young. Because I was raised in church and I was taught the Bible from birth, I had to examine my beliefs as a young adult to discover if I truly believed in God. After reflecting and processing experiences from my life, I came to my conclusion. I have felt God’s presence and I have seen Him at work. I know without a doubt God is real. There have been many difficult and stressful times throughout my life in which my faith has helped me. I am human, but I try not to get discouraged during trails because I know God is placing me in hard situations to teach me and improve me. Because of this, even in uncertain times, I have peace and am not afraid. I know who is in control and I know that regardless of the outcome of situations, it is going to be alright. Having Chaplain Miller speak to the class was helpful to me as it gave me information I will use throughout my college career and beyond. Because I have not been here long and I have been busy trying to adjust to my new life at Bridgewater academically and athletically, I had not yet explored spiritual services on campus to determine where I fit in. This presentation made it clear that the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a group where my spiritual needs can be met and I can meet students with similar beliefs and interests. Chaplain Miller challenged me to become active in this group and I am excited to join it in the near future. Chaplain Miller taught me the difference between religion and spirituality. To me, spirituality is something someone does to help others and make themselves a better person whereas religion is when you worship and believe in a greater force. We listened to “Imagine” by John Lennon, which highlighted peace and unity. We discussed our futures as not determined yet and our vocations can change. We are called to do something in particular. Sometimes people can think they know what they want to do with their lives, but later they feel they are being called to do something else. Chaplain Miller reassured me that it is alright that I do not know at this point what I want to do and that there are people on campus that will help me determine this. What I do clearly know is that God has a distinct path and purpose for every person. As I continue taking classes, it is critical that I continue to pray and seek God’s will in my life.
