Ethical Principles and Personal Values Having values and morals are very important to have in life. My personal and professional values and morals that are important to me are honesty, love, and empathy. These three values and/or moral are important to me because this was a part of my upbringing and have adapted them as a part of my life. I feel it’s important to treat other how you would like to be treated. Honesty helps with building strong trusting relationships with other individuals. To love and be love is a wonderful feeling of being needed and cared for by others. Having empathy allows you to put yourself in their individual’s shoes to relate what they may be experiencing. Values and morals are great for personal and professional development to build relationships, grow as a person, and to successfully assist clients with their needs. Our values and morals grow and change overtime. It involves our upbringing, culture, religion, and experiences that may involve several different environmental factors. Everyone has their own beliefs, values and morals and we must not press our individual feelings, beliefs, values, and/or morals on others. The ACA Code of Ethics A.4.b states, counselors must not impose their own values on their clients and must respect their diversity, regardless of how they align with the counselors personal values (American Counseling Association, 2014). Ethical Principle Most Difficult to Uphold in Faculty Video The video discussed the six fundamental principles of ethical and professional behavior: nonmaleficence, beneficence, autonomy, veracity, justice, and fidelity. After watching the videos and learning more about the ethical principles I feel I have gained a better understanding of what they mean. I feel that autonomy might be a fundamental principle that could be difficult sometimes. I have to remember that the client is entitled to their own thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values, and morals (Walden University, 2019). Applying the Ethical Decision-Making Process Applying the ethical decision-making processes to identify actions that I will take to minimize imposing my morals and values while upholding the ethical principal may be difficult at times. However, whenever in doubt it is very important to reach out to your supervisor and/or colleagues when needed for additional support. I will also remember that my opinions, beliefs, thoughts, morals, religion, feelings, and values are of my own and not press them onto other individuals. I will need to remain compassionate, reflect, focus on fairness, be empathetic, and overcome my biases. If ever needed it might be important to take a step back to reevaluate my processes.
