Case Study 2: Design Flaw
Diving deeper into the meaning of care ethics and virtue ethics gave me a better understanding of how to approach certain situations. When it comes to the workplace and hiring new employees, both of these ethics help you make rational decisions that will not just better your team but the company as a whole. Virtue Ethics focuses on the whole individual and the talents they can bring to the table. Care Ethics is about the capabilities of a potential new hire and how they can work and connect with others. Within this case study there are flaws in the system that need to be worked through so addressing this situation will not just make HR’s life easier, it will benefit the company as a whole.
When thinking about Virtue ethics the most important value is being morally virtuous. According to Virtue Ethics, you should mention something to Eliza or Keisha because when it comes to a hiring process to hopefully better a company or specific department you want to look at an applicant as a whole rather than what a system thinks is best. With what is happening, it is choosing applicants based on things they write on a resume, not what or who they truly represent. In Hursthouse’s reading, she says “To possess a virtue is to be a certain sort of person with a certain complex mindset. A significant aspect of this mindset is the wholehearted acceptance of a distinctive range of considerations as reasons for action.” When analyzing this quote from the reading it states that you should consider every candidate for the entire “package”
not just keywords that a computer-generated system picks. Mentioning something to Eliza or
Keisha will benefit the company as a whole because they can approach the situation with ideas to
better use the system. If they say that having a four-year degree isn’t necessary, then they should be able to tell the system that they aren’t specifically looking for that. When looking from a Virtue Ethics perspective, according to the moral theory chart the essential features are rationality, emotions, attitudes, and the capability of being trained. With these ideas, when it comes to hiring an employee these each plays an impact on the quality of an individual in a work
environment. In the scene of this case study, these come into play because just because someone has a 4-year in art or design doesn’t mean that they are going to be a great fit for the position. Focusing on the perspective of a Care Ethicist you should feel the need to mention something
to Eliza or Keisha because it should align with your focal points. In Held’s reading it states, “The
ethics of care, in contrast, typically appreciate the emotions and relational capabilities that enable
morally concerned persons in actual interpersonal contexts to understand what would be best.” The deeper understanding of this is that you should understand the interpersonal relationships between individuals and their potential capabilities. When it comes to this case study, having the HR system only really pulls applicants who use specific words because they have a four-year degree in art or design impacts the outcome of the pool you get to choose from. Bringing up the concern that it is affecting the company is important because you shouldn’t only get picked if you use specific words, it should be based on your talents. When filling out the Moral Theory Chart we talked about essential features of Care Ethics. Being interdependent, connected, showing emotions effectively, and rationality are at the core of this idea even though the application pool is coming out with decent individuals, addressing this concern can only help the hiring process overall. The end goal is to be a caring person overall and understand an individual as a whole and not just the words they use on paper. To have the ability to understand a whole
person and the interpersonal connections they can make with a team is part of the core values of Care Ethics.
Learning and studying both care a virtue ethics, in this case study I think you should mention what has been happening and be it up to Eliza or Keisha. In my opinion, I went back to the idea of Kantian deontology where deciding on what you should morally do is one of the important factors. In this situation, if I thought something could make the company I'm working for better, you should say something to fix the problem. If you were part of the HR team and you knew that
the new system was biased in some way, any rational person should feel that they should say something even if it is to gain a better understanding of why the system is making the decision it is. By bringing up the concern it will help you work through on if the candidates it's giving you are individuals that will truly fit the position or if you need to change the keywords that the system is looking for. I feel that the importance of bringing this up should make others aware of this so that HR can work through finding a candidate while incorporating care ethics and virtue ethics. Using those concepts will help them develop a stronger program in finding the perfect pool of potential individuals.
