Mandatory Military Service/Selective Service
Due to many conflicts worldwide, how can the military improve on enlistment numbers and sustain the personnel needed to protect the borders of our great nation? Is mandatory military
service an option? A recruiting shortfall translates directly to understrength units with less combat capability. Unless this trajectory is corrected, U.S. combat units will have diminished in strength at a time when the world is increasingly presenting challenges to the U.S. interest. (Spoehr, 2022). Due to the current unrest globally, mandatory military services/selective service will help maintain an active force, while providing necessary skills for teens going into adulthood. It can also foster national unity and a sense of patriotism.
After high school graduation all able-bodied students, male and female at the ripe age of 18 will have themselves tested and join the ranks of the military. When all formalities conclude, he/she will serve a mandatory enlistment term of 24 months. Not everyone will be able to serve in the military for various unknown reasons. For these, there will be mandatory physical and mental testing to ensure those who are not fit to join military ranks will be afforded the opportunity to gain employment outside of military service. Though the goal is to fill the military
ranks with young men and women straight out of high school, some may be granted permission to pursue other opportunities based on their talent. Some of these amazing youth may be phenomenal athletes or show some scholarly attributes. In this case they will be allowed to continue in this pursuit. Although mandatory military service is frowned upon, it can provide much needed skills to transition into adulthood after service.
Military training skills are of different varieties. These skills are not limited to combat, but also technical skills. The U.S. military takes great pride in their training programs that are introduced to their prospect servicemembers.

These skills are in a variety of fields including logistics, auto mechanics and multiple other fields. The features of military service suggest that the service has important indirect effects on subsequent skill acquisition. (Bingley et al., 2022). These skills are important for job advancement and speak to the great impact of military service and deserve much attention. After military service, young adults can rest assured that the skills learned and practiced while serving can help them in education or catapult them into civilian life and be on pace to compete with their civilian counterparts. While learning and developing skills for civilian life, mandatory military service fosters national unity and patriotism.
The first thing that comes to mind when unity and patriotism is mentioned is the September 11
th
attack on the United States of America. The defense of the nation is a concern of all citizens, and they should have a vested interest in its security. Being a world power, The United States of America has many enemies that spans across the globe. This country has always
joined together in time of conflict, regardless of gender, race, age or economic background. With
mandatory military service individuals with the common goal of defending the great nation will stand shoulder to shoulder to ensure safety to all citizens.
In conclusion, mandatory military service may not be the popular choice among American citizens, but it can allow the country to maintain a military capable of defending its borders while ensuring the youth can grow skills for life after the military. Maintaining the strength of our military is crucial because of all the things that are currently happening around the world. The military can equip our younger generation with much needed technical and life skills that can help into adult life. Love of country brings everyone together regardless of creed or race to fight for the greater good of the country. Mandatory military service ended in 1973 and
the military began filling its ranks by volunteers only. By doing so, our numbers have dwindled 3

to all-time lows. With mandatory military service, there will always be men and women capable of defending the borders of the United States of America when needed.
