COMPARISON PAPER – Johnson Comparison Paper for Crabb Tiara Johnson Liberty University
COMPARISON PAPER – Johnson Summary Primary Goal Clients come to counseling to gain perspective on their goals, life, and circumstances. The goals depend on the counselor’s theory, the relationship and trust built with the client and the direction of the counselor’s focus. The primary goal is determined by the client realizing what their wants and needs are. The client needs to identify what they are hoping to receive or accomplish from counseling (Crabb, 2013). Development of Problems and Personal Need Problems occur when we as believers base our need for happiness as something that can be bought, found, or stolen (Crabb, 2013). Many clients may come to a counselor because they are unhappy or dissatisfied with something. Psalm 16:11 states, "In Your presence is fullness of joy. At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore (NKJV).” This means you can go to church, be hospitable, feed the homeless and be pleasant to everyone but if you do not seek his presence, you will not have a feeling of gladness, regardless of your situation. To constantly stay in the presence of God will give you joy. Once you have joy, you will find strength to endure the situations you face whether you are healthy, sick, struggling, etc. Biblical Integration You need the study of theology and the study of sciences to understand how the brain works and why it does certain things (Crabb, 2013). We have the choice to choose God, but he has already chosen us by giving his son for our sins. When you try to remove yourself from God’s will and what the Bible says it does not mean you are not going to go through trials and tribulations. It just means you will have a harder time finding happiness and peace in your
COMPARISON PAPER – Johnson situations. Psalm 139 talks about David and how God is omnipresent. He is always present in every situation. You are never alone. God created creation that includes places and locations. Which means there is no place that is hidden from him. You must believe he can change the situation and stay in his presence. He will give you joy, love, peace, strength and understanding (discernment). Formula for Change The desired outcome of counseling depends on the counselor’s goal for the client. Non- Christian counselors believe that the counselee needs to have their wants met. Whatever the client’s definition of that may be. The client seeking what makes them happy will solidify their goals. With Christian counselors the client is being assisted with understanding what they do and how they connect with Christ (Crabb, 2013). The relationship the client builds within scripture and prayer with help their needs to be met and find true happiness. Balance of Theology and Spirituality Crabb (2013) discusses the difference between theology and spirituality. The author speaks on each with unbiased stating pros and cons of using both in counseling. It is Crabb’s impression that most Christian professionals use integration to combine scriptures and psychology. This may create a psychotherapy approach. At times scriptures may contradict the choices or circumstances of the client and the decisions they may have to face. Human Personality It is hard to understand what and how our needs should be met when we deflect our feelings in our situation. We rely on people or circumstance to make us feel love, security, and trust. When the situation does not meet our expectations, we feel like the things we needed go

COMPARISON PAPER – Johnson away and cannot be salvaged. We develop behaviors to satisfy voids or unmet needs instead of focusing on building a firm foundation with Christ (Crabb, 2013). One that is built with consistency and true satisfaction no matter what the situation may look like. Counselor’s Function and Role Crabb states that a client cannot be adequately counseled without the counselor understanding the client’s feelings, emotions and behavior which can be affected by daily events. As counselors, we must be unbiased. Our response to a client’s background or experiences are affected by what we believe or our opinion of a subject or event. The same can be said about the counselee, if a counselor does not create a safe and accepted environment to make changes to their beliefs and create a place of healing (Crabb, 2013). Major Contribution to Counseling Crabb made a major contribution to Christian counseling. Crabb incorporated the Gospel to assist individuals with identifying their internal needs in counseling instead of the nouthetic external focus, which he recognized held some risk. Crabb identified that a model needed to be provided inside the church-by-church members to counsel Christian individuals. Crabb (2013) believes churches and church elders should be trained effectively to help heal troubled people. Limitations of This Counseling Theory Limitations were found in Crabb’s theory of Christian counseling. To discover what psychological constructs are appropriate for integration, judgement must play a role in counseling. Judgement determines the risk and success in understanding human behavior. Crabb (2013) spoiled the Egyptians concept and blending one religion into another (syncretism). This
COMPARISON PAPER – Johnson can lead us away from the Gospel. Classification Integration is considered when Crabb discusses classification. The idea that diverse groups of people can come together and coexist in the same environment. Crabb (2013) was an integrationist. Crabb was not opposed to integrating methods that were unorthodox as longs they did not go against the Gospel. Practical Application Utility for Counseling and Potential Personal Influence Crabb’s (2013) work influenced the expansion of Christian counseling. Understanding the Word of God and how it impacts my way of life has shown to be crucial in maintaining a healthy mental, spiritual, and emotional lifestyle. Using judgment of when and how to share the Gospel can help heal hurting individuals who are seeking counseling. Acknowledging one’s worth or value internally through Christ assists Christians and those seeking spiritual guidance space to grow. Crabb’s influence has carried over into my life, ministry, and business endeavors. I am learning to incorporate God’s gift of righteousness in every aspect of my day to day. I realized I was living for self, for others and not working in the body the way I should. I have realized that my job, degree, and ministry title does not prove my worth or value. When it comes to sharing the Gospel with individuals following the Word of God and focusing on helping others can give justification and bring healing through salvation and counseling. In the past because I was not qualified on paper, I did not share the Gospel with others. God’s gift of
COMPARISON PAPER – Johnson righteousness has taught me that even in the state that I am in I am valuable to the body and to ministry. Brief Example in a Counseling Moment A personal counseling moment was between my friend C of twenty years and I. C recently separated from my godson M’s father due to domestic violence, and they chose to co- parent. While C has chosen to keep her son out of the adult issues the two parents have been facing with custody my godson’s father J has been very vocal on visits with him about how he negatively feels about M’s mother. M is only eight years old and expresses the feeling that he must act like he does not like his mom or does not miss her when he is around his dad. When he comes home to his mom, M has started to lie about doing chores, stopped nightly hygiene routines, and began disrupting his class at school. M could not explain why he recently started acting out at school. M did state to his mom he had to lie because he did not want his dad to be angry at him or his mom to be angry with his dad. M kept these feelings and emotions inside because he did not want to disappoint his father by telling anyone including his mother what M experienced during those visits with his father. M knows his mom and dad love him but since his dad is not at home, M cares about whether his dad accepts him. At such an early age it must be hard to separate your worth and value from how someone treats you or the ones you love. As adults some of us are still navigating how to accomplish the same thing. M has been going to church as of recent with his mom and prays before bed. When C confided in me, I expressed that she and M needed to start going to church and understanding the

COMPARISON PAPER – Johnson Word of God on a consistent basis. M cannot understand that his worth does not come from people but from God if he does not have proper understanding or guidance. I encouraged her to explain to him that his worth comes from God. Matthew 10:31 New International Version states, “So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” In the Gospel Christ tells us we are valued. I encouraged her to believe she is of value and that M should know he is valued and loved as well. She expressed that my words encouraged her and agreed that M should know that nothing he could tell her would make her love him less. Their worth came from God’s righteousness not from individuals they should not have to be afraid of other’s rejecting them because God accepted them. C told me after she spoke to M, she encouraged him to tell her the truth no matter how he thought she would feel. She also placed him in therapy to help him express himself to a third party outside of her and his father. C felt like she was fighting for herself and her son alone. She began to break down crying. I prayed with and for her and her son that they would create a safe place to confide in God and one another. That M would not feel like he must lie to her to keep the peace or live to please or gain approval from his father. Conclusion In conclusion Crabb (2013) saw a need for the Gospel to be understood and applied in counseling hurting individuals. Individuals may adopt false beliefs that can cause problems in their spiritual and mental growth. Organizational adoption from the Word of God steps away from a practical perspective leaving the constructs focused on the Gospel. Applying the Gospel to the internal needs of others provided a counseling model that could be accomplished by the local church and its members.
