Developing your Emerging Philosophy of Counseling Counseling: Theory & Practice As we near the end of this course, these questions may help you begin to articulate your emerging Philosophy of Counseling . Your philosophy will continue to develop as you move through the next stages of this program (and beyond) but your ideas here will provide a base from which to build a more complex and integrated frame. Please answer these questions briefly but completely (full sentences). 1. How do your life experiences (your ‘come-from place’) influence your emerging theory of change? I think that I am very drawn to Humanistic, Feminist, and Narrative Theory because of how I want to be treated in this world. Humanistic emphasizes empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard and that is something that is important to me if I want to trust someone. I feel like there have been moments in my come from place where I haven’t felt listened to and I want my future clients to feel as heard as possible. Feminist theory because I believe that I have a strong suit in wanting to help the community and I have strong feelings of not being seen/heard/believed as a woman in my come from place. I believe in Narrative theory because I want everyone from all backgrounds to have the opportunity to tell their story just as I want to tell my own . 2. What view of human nature from the theories we have studied most fits your own philosophical views? Explain. Some of the major themes within narrative theory are on the need for order, a sense of self, and a sense of active personal agency. Other important themes focus on social relatedness and development through the lifespan. Individuals are encouraged to view themselves as active participants in their lives. I believe we need to have a frame of work that encompasses the lifespan in order to prepare for unwanted thoughts, feelings, and behaviors later in life and outside of the therapeutic relationship. Feminist theory focuses on principles of empowerment, Feminist Theory/therapy is a type of therapy based on viewing individuals within their sociocultural context. The main idea behind this therapy is that the psychological problems of women and minorities are often a symptom of larger problems in the social structure in which they live. I want people to feel like they can tell their stories and how they are living it and be heard and trusted while doing so. I want to be the listening ear that someone might feel they have never experienced. 3. What do you think are the essential characteristics of an effective relationship between the client and the therapist (list two)? How important is this relationship as a factor for client growth and healing? I believe that two essential characteristics for an effective relationship between the client and therapist is congruence and unconditional positive regard. I believe this is the case because the therapist and client need to be able to trust one another in order
to grow towards a working alliance that will have long-term positive effects on the client’s goals and behaviors. Without trust, the client will not be able to tell important details to their therapist about their life, feelings, emotions, and behaviors. Without trust it is harder to gauge new and valuable information in order to help a client. 4. What is one personal value you hold that you see as influencing your work as an art therapist/counselor? How might this value influence you as a helping person? I feel like establishing trust, one of my core personal values, is essential to work as an art therapist or counselor. My best relationships in life have been built on the foundation of trust, I feel like someone has my best interest in mind when they offer their trust to me and vice versa. This will influence me as a helping person because I will be seen as dependable, accountable, and trustworthy to others which will therefore allow them to build a strong connection with me. That way I am seen as someone that can protect and take care of their most vulnerable moments, because they know that I will be able to hold those moments for them and covet them. 5. Now that you have studied the various theories, what is one next step you could take to begin to formulate your own orientation to counseling/art therapy? My next step is practicing these theories outside of the classroom. So, for example, being a listening ear to others in ways that they might not have felt heard before is something that I can practice. Practicing unconditional positive regard with the people, friendships, and relationships around me will help me learn how to do this for future clients. I can do this by viewing others’ opinions as valuable, even if they differ from mine. I can suspend judgment and see how that allows for another person to open. All this can be done in order to formulate my own orientation to counseling/art therapy. This assignment is worth 5 points.
