Honestly not attempting to be controversial but I just do not think that any of our public figures are truthful or honest. I think the majority of them lie or are deceitful in different ways. We’ve grown up in a society where people lie and lie for a multitude of reasons such as pride, ignorance, fear, and rebellion. See Lance Armstrong, see former President Bill Clinton, see French Minister Jérôme Cahuzac all of which were caught in a web of lies and of course there is a plethora of examples of public figures lying. Whether public figure or not everyone is guilty of this sin (Romans 3:23-24). For the sake of the discussion, I’ll say the Dean of Theology at the African Christian University in Lusaka, Zambia Voddie Baucham, Jr. How he demonstrates honesty is by standing and speaking up for the truth in faithless times. He uncompromisingly preaches the gospel and the centrality of Christ. Is it possible for a leader to be effective without being completely forthright? As a leader, one thing is for certain your marines, sailors, your subordinates will inevitable pick up on when or if your lying to them. The best thing is to display sound moral principles for your subordinates to emulate. Dishonesty can destroy trust and unit cohesion faster than any wrong decision can. “Most ethical problems can be avoided by being forthright, honest and direct with everybody in every situation, every time” (Marines.mil, 2023). Reply Good question sir. No, it not enough but, I think it’s a good start. The image of Christ is more than truth and integrity. I don’t believe any human can emulate Christ (match or surpass) in any way. However, we are called to imitate him. To take him as a model of example and follow in his footsteps the best way possible (1 Corinthians 11:1). Kenny, great post the week. I enjoyed reading your thoughts and perspective on the subject matter. The main reason why scholars have debated of the decades over ethical dilemmas is because not every situation is the same, its fluid. Because of the fluidity of every situation, a mechanical, cookie cutter, “one size fits all” answer would not be appropriate. Even Voddie Baucham, whom I have high regard for is not perfect and though I have never caught him in the act of sin, I know that he has (Romans 3:23-24). As a leader, it is incumbent upon you to be straightforward and not as the saying goes, “beat around the bush.” Being straightforward matters to your staffs, and employees. For an organization to thrive and build an strong culture created on trust and understanding, the leader must emulate honestly for others to imitate.
