Heaven Whitaker CJ130 Ethics in Criminal Justice Professor L. Lazarevic Assignment 3.2 02/12/2024 3.2 Assignment: Noble Cause Corruption Noble cause corruption is corruption caused by the adherence to a teleological ethical system, suggesting that people will use unethical or illegal means to attain desirable goals, a result which appears to benefit the greater good. Officers will use their discretion or fall into Noble Cause Corruption for several reasons. They may feel strongly about this sort of issue that they are faced with. It is a way to achieve a desired goal for their own cause. For example, a police officer, got multiple reports of people seeing a dog left in a car on a scorching summer day. Yes, the window was cracked but the a/c was not left running and the car was just too hot for the dog to be left in those conditions. In South Carolina there currently is not a law against individuals who leave their animals in cars that are hot enough to kill the animal, there has been talks about creating a law to help but nothing has gone into effect yet. The officer broke the glass out of the door and called animal control. The officer got in trouble for this, but he felt strongly that
the issue was animal cruelty. Sometimes Noble Cause Corruption may lead to evidence being planted to get the bad guy on charges or what not. Noble cause corruption does not belong in any law enforcement branch even if it gets the job done because your beliefs of what is right and wrong are not 100% accurate and can cause more chaos then necessary and you could lose your job or worse a dangerous criminal could be set free because of your choice. Officers trying to do the right thing or getting the job done may have to break the rules to catch the bad guy. Situations like this could endanger more lives. Avoid this by following policies and procedures and always acting professionally. Many variables go into noble cause corruption. Having this viewpoint of trying to do the right thing while being firm, fair, and consistent is a constant battle. There is always a proper and improper method of handling a situation. Always go back to policy, especially if you are new in your field. Law enforcement officials and officers are held to a higher standard for a reason and if we began to allow any officer to start taking things into his own hands to get results then at the end of the day, they are no better than the criminals they lock up. Law is the law, and it must be obeyed at all costs no matter the outcome.
