Running head: THE IMAPACT OF STANDARDIZED NURSING TERMINOLOGY 1 The Impact of Standardized Nursing Terminology Name Institutional Affiliation
THE IMPACT OF STANDARDIZED NURSING TERMINOLOGY 2 The Impact of Standardized Nursing Terminology Standardized nursing terminology is an essential element in the healthcare system, which helps in the recording of the patients’ information and in improving the quality of health outcome. The 21st century is evident with several technologies which influence every level of performance in the nursing profession ( Rutherford, 2008). The paper will analyze the various ways of informing the nurses and others on the importance of the technique, their benefits and challenges they pose in the healthcare system. The nurses and others who have been using the standardized nursing language but have not realized the value of the technology can be made aware of its importance in several ways. First, the concept involves the definition of nursing care roles and communicating them accurately to both the nurses and other associated health providers (Tastan et al., 2014). After which, the nursing care is measured and standardized for the development of a more extensive database that can be used for reference. The standardized care, therefore, provides evidence- based care that can be stored in the Electronic Health Records (EHR) (McCormick et al., 2015). Nurses can be informed of the standardized terminology through the definition of the problem that exists in expressing nursing knowledge. In most cases, the nurses fail to achieve quality health outcome due to the complexity of the interventions and contextual elements of care which are well defined by using the standardized terminology ( Rutherford, 2008). Importantly, the nurses can be informed of the importance of the concept through teaching the language which enlightens them on how it’s useful in caring for the patients. With the growing technology and increased demand for quality health, the healthcare system is undergoing technological changes to help in achieving the health outcome. The implementation of standardized nursing terminology will be beneficial in different ways. The
THE IMPACT OF STANDARDIZED NURSING TERMINOLOGY 3 concept enables a better means of communication between the health providers hence understanding the diagnosis recommended by the physician (Mollie Cummins, 2016). Also, it increases the visibility of the nurses’ work, which, for long, has not been seen. The computerized documentation of the practices done by the nurses like treatment, making judgements, and nursing wounds are clearly stated. Improved communication among the health providers subsequently result in better care for the patients and also reduces the error that occurs due to the lack of standardized methods of treatment (Mollie Cummins, 2016). The treatment outcomes are recorded, thus necessitating an evaluation of the nurses’ performance and competency. Lastly, the standards of care are documented or stored in the EHR, thus keeping the health providers on track on how to apply the treatment. The use of standardized nursing terminology can be challenging when it comes to things like the system barriers, the nurse practitioners barrier, and the EHR operation barrier. The system is barely available, and if found, it is costly to be installed in the health institutions; thus the small and developing hospitals are not able to purchase (Thede and Schwirian, 2015). Moreover, the technology requires a lot of time to document the terminologies into the EHR, which can otherwise be used in performing other productive activities. The concept can also be challenging to implement if some of the health providers lack competency or confidence in the computer, thus requiring further training ( Rutherford, 2008). The familiarity of the technology to the nurses can also be a barrier to its implementation. Operational barriers like ambulatory EHR access and the ability to incorporate the standardized nursing language in the EHR system can be a challenge in the application.
