Report
Due to the ever changing health care system, it is important that there are health care professionals to meet the increasing demands. Therefore, The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report has come up with key messages that helps provide recommendations on how to provide better care and how to improve the health care system (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2011). The IOM report has had a huge impact on the Advanced Practice Nurse role. It has allowed nurses take on a leadership role. As well as allowing them to collaborate with other health care professionals to help provide high-quality care. When we think of physicians, we think of someone who helps promote and maintain optimal health. They are also known to take the lead when it comes to making health care decisions as well as being the leader to other health care professions. However, for years, nurses have been providing individualized, one on one care. This includes teaching and providing an understanding on health conditions/medication, resources, being an advocate, providing emotional support, collaborating with other team members to coordinate patient care, etc. Woo et al. (2017), mentions, “the global annual growth of the nurse practitioner (NP) workforce has been estimated to be between three to nine times greater compared to physicians.” This proves NP’s are needed and are competent to work in their full extent to provide care and to help improve the health care system. Also, the IOM report emphasis how leadership is a skill a nurse must obtain. (IOM, 2011). Nurses have leadership skills that allows them to make decisions that are evidence based. They are fully competent to work with physicians, dietitians, socials workers, or other integrated multi-disciplinary team members to coordinate patient care. Overall, nurses are able to help improve patients overall well-being and improve the health care system.
