Practicum Journal Entry For my capstone project, my practicum site is Northeast Georgia Medical Cener, Braselton. Last week, I visited the community around this site. I was able to gather key information about the surrounding environment. This week I was able to begin my direct clinical hours. I started my day meeting with my preceptor, Jennifer. We went over my vision for my project, as well as my goals and objectives. Jennifer provided me with some vital information and directed me towards who she thinks I should focus my attention on for this project. I met with a few nurses from 3 different units. I started to build a rapport with them and explain why I was here. Everyone was very nice and welcoming. In the United States about half of all people will be diagnosed with a mental health disorder in their lifetime (Mental Health, 2020). Healthy People 2030 has set a goal to improve mental health by prevention, screening, assessment, and treatment. They also want to improve overall health and quality of life (Healthy People 2030, n.d.). There are several factors that can affect our mental health such as trauma, bereavement, and longtime stress. I have a passion for helping people and understanding the why behind a problem. However, sometimes it is not a specific why but rather, a lot of whys. My aim is to find out these whys and offer possible solutions. The World Health Organization has defined workplace stress as “the response people may have when presented with work demands and pressures that are not matched to their knowledge and abilities and which challenge their ability to cope” (Occupational Health, 2022, p.1). Nurses are at risk for occupational stress due to several factors like working long hours, lack of support and moral injury. My goal today was to see if anyone has experienced work related stress. After meeting as a group, I was able to meet with some nurses individually. I began with nurse K. Nurse K has been a nurse for 9 years. She currently works in the coronary care unit. I began by sharing my nursing journey and what led me to choose my topic. Nurse K then shared her story and her time working during the pandemic in covid unit. She described that time as tumultuous, dreadful period that was exhausting physically, mentally, and emotionally. She states that she was beyond stressed and did not cope healthily. One of her biggest stressors was going to work every day knowing she would without a doubt watch at least one if not multiple people die alone. Another stressor she reported was the fear of not knowing if she would catch the virus and be the next victim. Nurse K explained that she left the bedside for a while after this. Her story was truly heartbreaking but yet eye opening. Many workplaces have started to see the magnitude of employees suffering from work related stress and mental illness. It has highly been researched since the pandemic and interventions have been developed to address them better. However, it still remains an often neglected aspect (Maulik, 2017).
