2 Critical Analysis Impact on Various Institutions Schizophrenia imposes significant burden on families, communities, employees, education, healthcare systems and government budgets (Jenkins et al., 2011). Mental disorder can contribute to a cycle of poverty because it can affect one’s ability to perform in both paid and unpaid roles affecting social and economic productivity. Many veterans and their families usually struggle to afford mental health services, and others choose not to seek medical services due to stigma associated with mental problems like schizophrenia, and therefore may disengage from the society because of shame. The effect is increased unemployment rate and healthcare expenditure, which currently stands at about $3.5 trillion with mental health alone taking almost 90 percent of the total cost (CDC, 2020). The social lens depicts how societal knowledge, awareness and response affects mental health, and therefore it is critical to adopt effective channels of creating awareness to change views concerning mental health, especially through the use of social media which is mainly accessed by many people in the society. Benefit from Change The first aspect that can benefit from a change in addressing schizophrenia among the veterans is the lack of access to mental health services. The lack of equal access to suitable mental health services for American veterans upon their return depicts the inequality that exists in access to mental health services among the wider population and has contributed to increased cases of suicide among veterans (Hester, 2017). Enhancing the health and wellbeing of veterans requires improved access to medication, increased collaboration between various stakeholders including non-profit mental health providers from local and state levels of government. Also, there is need to increase the availability of crisis intervention of mental health services to all veterans across the country. Raising awareness concerning mental health like schizophrenia is another crucial aspect that can help in combating discrimination and stigma associated with this global issue. The Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act of 2015 was appended into law by President Obama to help in preventing suicide among the veterans by giving them access to critical information concerning mental health problems (Adams et al., 2017). There is also a shortage of mental health expertise, which will require employment and proper training of more staff to increase the number of personnel involved in provision of mental health care. Benefit and Challenges There are several benefits to improving wellness like better physical and mental wellbeing, enhanced productivity, and decreased healthcare expenses.
3 Achieving mental and physical wellness will help to achieve the other dimensions of wellness such as financial, social, spiritual, occupational, intellectual and environmental aspects (SAMHSA, 2016). This shows that neglecting any of the dimensions will eventually affect the other dimensions, and ultimately the overall health, wellbeing and quality of life (Stowen, 2017). Achieving the overall wellness can be difficult because of several factors like limited access to quality care mainly affected by socioeconomic, political or environmental factors. Lack of knowledge concerning the benefits of wellness and where to seek help can also hinder progress in tackling mental health problem among veterans. In addition, societal stigma and discrimination can also affect those seeking help. To enhance health and wellness, it is important to deal with these obstacles. Social Practices When it comes to mental health, biases and beliefs can have major impact especially in cases involving discrimination and stigma which prevent people from seeking help they need. Discrimination and stigma towards mental disorders often come from misconception that mental illness is as a result of personal failure or sign of weakness rather than how our brains process emotions and experiences. Improving social practices can help those with mental problem to get help without discrimination or stigma, thus improving health outcomes and promoting wellness in the society.
