Related Content Restraints should only be used as a last resort when all other strategies to manage behavior have been exhausted. The impacts for improperly applying the use of restraints can result in a criminal suit being filled against you and the potential suspension or loss of your nursing license. Underlying Principles Only specialists with the necessary training and familiarity with the proper protocols should apply restraints. Different facility rules and different laws apply to multiple different scenarios. Specifically for using restraints on children age 8 and under restraints must be applied for no longer than one hour before the doctor needs to renew the order and the patient must be observed every 15-30 minutes. Nursing Interventions Regular monitoring and assessment of the child's physical and mental well-being should be conducted while using restraints to ensure their safety and minimize any potential harm Attempt to comfort or console the patient.
