1 Western Compressed Time Frame BScN Program N2600b Mental Health Care Week 4: Mood Disorders Overview Mood disorders generally include depressive (uni-polar) and manic-depressive (bipolar) disorders (Rupcich, 2019) and are considered one of the greatest disease burdens in both developing and developed countries worldwide (World Health Organization, 2009). Common to mood disorders are feelings of sadness, emptiness or irritability, combined with physical and cognitive changes. Mood disorders are associated with reduced quality of life and with chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Of most concern is the increased risk of suicidality (Rupcich, 2019). A combination of pharmacological interventions alongside non- pharmacological treatments is common, and both are aimed at optimizing function and maximizing quality of life of patients and their families.
