Running head: HEALTHCARE INFORMATION TRENDS 1 Health information technology trends Name Nursing
HEALTHCARE INFORMATION TRENDS 2 There are two healthcare technology trends that have been witnessed at the healthcare facility. The first one is the electronic health record which is a digitalized form of the patient paper and is used to store patient information and can only be accessible to authorized personnel (Gianfrancesco et al., 2018, p. 1544). The second technology tend is the use of telehealth. This technology is used to ensure that patients, especially in remote areas have access to medical services. The main potential risks associated with these technologies is that they are subject to cybercrime hence data can be accessed by unauthorized personnel which is against the privacy policies such as HIPAA security policy (Pollard et al., 2017, p. 304). Patient information can also be lost as a result of cybercrime. The benefit of these technologies is that they are more secure than the conventional methods which involved the use of filing systems. Example is the use of the electronic health record which is more secure and patient information can only be accessed by authorized personnel. The risk associated with legislation is that when this data is accessed by unauthorized personnel then it will be in violation of the HIPAA security rule therefore the organization will be held accountable. The most promising technology is the use of telehealth. This is because it has proven effective in the previous years. COVID-19 has brought about many challenges such as hospitals being overwhelmed with patients while other patients fearing going to hospitals. The use of telehealth has proven beneficial during this time and has widely been implemented in nursing practice to provide care. The use of telehealth will certainly improve patient care outcomes, efficiency in treating patients and data management. According to research conducted by (Koonin et al., 2020, p. 1597) telehealth was widely accepted by post discharge patients. The
HEALTHCARE INFORMATION TRENDS 3 findings of the study was that majority of the patients were satisfied with the medical services they received. This also reduced cost of patient care.
