Link: http://www.businessinsider.com/annoying-mistakes-job-seekers-make-2017-3 Reference: Cain, A. (2017). A woman has reviewed more than 40,000 resumes outlines the 8 most annoying mistakes she sees. The speaker in the video shares her knowledge/insight on cultural differences. She also lists four tips for communicating with cultural awareness (observation skills, appreciation of differences, respecting the individual concerns, and be patient). Please take five minutes and watch the video and share your thoughts. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDvLk7e2Irc Reference: Speak First. (2009). [Video]. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkbxwBBVS4g God bless, Joy Nyawah Yambasu Oct 30, 2023, 10:10 PM Unread Cultural competence in healthcare significantly improves the health outcome and overall quality of services provided to populations from diverse socioeconomic, racial, or ethnic backgrounds. When considering a program for implementation within a population with such diversity, a public health professional should assess the social determinants of health (SDoH) socioeconomic status, educational level, etc., to determine the potential barriers to maximizing the full capacity of the program. In addition, for a healthcare system that has health disparities towards certain ethnically-minority groups, projects that seek to bridge the gap require keen attention to all the unfavorable factors that contribute to their lack of access to healthcare. (Nair & Adetayo, 2019). Assuming I was tasked with implementing a health promotion program within a culturally diverse community served by my practicum organization, I would apply the following culturally appropriate concepts
and skills: (1) form an implementing team consisting of staff from diverse backgrounds and trained in cultural competency. (2) include interpreter services in the program to reduce or eliminate language barriers in communication or health information dissemination. (3) provide a culturally appropriate setting to ensure individuals feel comfortable to request and utilize that health services. (Nair & Adetayo, 2019) At my practicum site, new patients are given a form that assesses their needs regarding the social determinants of health. The information they provide is used to tailor the social services provided to them and where to refer them if needed. This form also assesses the presence of any potential language barriers or communication difficulties. As I build cultural competence, I have been working with the quality and referral coordinators to reach out to eligible individuals for certain health-related and social services through telephone calls, to help them with the right resources that meet their individual-specific needs.
