Wade, Texas has enacted strict abortion bans, severely limiting access to reproductive care. This disproportionately impacts low-income women and minorities who already face barriers accessing healthcare. Improving access to reproductive services would allow women autonomy over their healthcare decisions. It would also improve health outcomes as women would be able to obtain safe, legal abortions rather than resorting to risky alternatives. Evidence shows restricting abortion access is associated with increases in maternal morbidity and pregnancy-related deaths. Texas has the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world. Ensuring access to reproductive care, including abortion, prenatal care, contraception, and sex education, would lead to better public health through lower rates of unwanted pregnancy, maternal deaths, and unsafe abortions. Focusing resources on expanding family planning services and repealing bans on abortion care would uphold the right to reproductive healthcare access that has been eliminated in Texas.
