Discuss: Social Media Disinformation Q. 1 Per the CDC instructions, Patient A, B, and C should have COVID-19 listed on their death certificates. This is because COVID-19 had a role to play in their deaths. Patient A developed pneumonia and ARDS as a result of COVID-19, leading to respiratory arrest. Patient B did not have any pre-existing conditions until testing positive for COVID-19. On the other hand, Patient C had moderate asthma but developed respiratory arrest and pneumonia, which, according to CDC instructions, COVID-19 leads to such life-threatening conditions. Q. 2 For Patient A, the immediate cause of death would be COVID-19. Patient B's immediate cause of death would be a stroke and cardiac arrest. Patient C's immediate cause of death would be COVID-19. Lastly, Patient D's immediate cause of death would be the motor vehicle accident. Q. 3 Patient A’s underlying cause of death would be Type 2 Diabetes. Patient B's underlying cause of death would be COVID-19. Patient C's underlying cause of death would be moderate asthma and a fall. Patient D's underlying cause of death would be COVID-19 and asthma. Q. 4 One of the reasonable clarifications for why 6 percent of death certificates did not list any other death cause is due to diagnostic challenges. For cases where various aspects are involved, diagnosing the precise cause of death may be complex. Some deaths associated with COVID-19
might have been characterized simply by the virus if it was the primary cause. Another reason is underlying conditions; in instances where COVID-19 is the predominant cause of death, the effect of the underlying condition may not be clearly listed. Q. 5 The underlying cause of death is considered the condition that started the chain of events resulting in death. When filling out the death certificate, the chain of events is identified as a causal pathway, from the immediate cause to the underlying cause. For instance, a chain of events would be pneumonia because of COVID-19. COVID-19 causes pneumonia, which then leads to death. Another reason is that COVID-19 may have exacerbated an existing condition or increased complication risks. Q. 6 After completing the exercise, I learned that COVID-19 ought to be listed as the immediate death when it directly results in death. In addition, COVID-19 can also result in fatal illness and death, especially in patients with underlying conditions. Q. 7 One health disinformation claimed that if an individual drank bleach or any disinfectant, they could be cured of COVID-19. However, according to WHO, there is no scientific or data proof approving or recommending disinfectants for curing or preventing COVID-19.
