2 Antidepressants Medications SSRIs are the most commonly prescribed class of antidepressant medications. These medications include sertraline, fluoxetine, and escitalopram. They primarily target the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. Serotonin helps regulate the appetite, mood, and sleep (Schimelpfening, 2023). SSRIs' critical mechanism of action is to prevent serotonin reuptake, enhancing its concentration in the synaptic cleft and supporting neurotransmission. The limbic system is one of the brain parts involved in this mechanism. It comprises the amygdala, which is significant in processing emotions, while the hippocampus regulates mood and improves memory (Schimelpfening, 2023). Through moderating serotonin levels in these parts of the brain, SSRIs aim to lessen depressive symptoms. Study displays that the growing rate of antidepressant treatment has elevated concerns about over-prescription to patients with less severe depression (Schimelpfening, 2023). Community examinations discovered that the rate of antidepressant use might now exceed the incidence of depression, mostly among older adults. Such results show that, while the medications can be operative for many patients, they might be prescribed despite exhaustive consideration for alternative treatment or probable side effects. Over-reliance on medications alone might not address the essential causes of depression. Complimentary and alternative medicine has been utilized in several instances to treat depression in patients. Such medications comprise anything from diet and exercise to mental conditioning and variations in lifestyle. For example, Yoga workouts through explicit body postures and breathing practices have been labelled as suitable for depression (Ashraf et al., 2921). Furthermore, massage therapies are based on the concept that the mind and body are consistent. Research has proposed that a mixture of mind and body exercises can improve feelings of calmness, which are perfect for a patient with depression (Ashraf et al., 2921).
3 In conclusion, even though antidepressants such as SSRIs can be beneficial for many people with depression, they are not deprived of controversy. Over-prescription concerns underscore the need for a wide-ranging method of mental health that considers alternative strategies and individualized treatment plans.
