In this situation, the baby has febrile seizures. Children who have had febrile seizures are at slightly increased risk for epilepsy. The febrile seizures happen when the temperature rise rather than after prolonged elevation, usually in the first 24 hours of the illness (McKinney, pg. 1296) 2, How should the nurse respond to Abby’s mother’s question about brain damage? - It is not brain damage now. In a fever induced seizure, the brain trying to reset itself from spinking a higher fever by seizing (McKinney, pg. 1292) 3, What are the priority nursing intervention in the ED for Abby? - Institute seizure precautions that include padded side rails, bed in low position, and suction and airway at bedside. Explain for the parents that do not put anything into the child’s mouth during a seizure (McKinney, pg. 1297). 4, Describe first aid care for a patient who is actively seizing - Place the child on the side in a lateral position and do not restrain the child. We should loosen clothing around the neck for child. Instruct the parents how to record the time when seizure happen and end, precipitating factors, how the behavior of child including level of consciousness observed during and after the seizure, bladder or bowel (McKinney, pg. 1297).
