Research Article Appraisal, Part One
Authors, Title, and Abstract
1.
Discuss author(s) qualifications to conduct the study, including educational preparation (PhD, MSN, etc.) and clinical experience of author[s].
All the authors in the article are registered nurses. The authors are qualified to perform this kind of study because of their background in medicine. One of the authors Leann Li, has a bachelor’s degree and has worked in the oncology unit. One of the other nurses that is an author for this study Cynthia Allison also has a bachelor’s degree and has experience working in the Emergency department. The final author Kimberly Adams is a registered nurse, and I did not find more information on her. 2.
Discuss the clarity of the article title (type of study, variables, and population stated).
The authors were clear in the article title. When a person is reading the title, they are fully
aware of what the study is trying to achieve. According to the article this was a “longitudinal, pre-test post-test, quasi-experimental design”. () The variables in this article were the patient’s pain and music videos. The population according to the article was 31 adults with chronic pain. 3.
Discuss the quality of the abstract (purpose, design, sample, intervention, and key results presented).
The quality of the abstract in this article is great. The purpose if clearly defined. The design is also part of the abstract. It is a longitudinal quasi experimental design. It clearly states the sample which was 31 individuals with chronic pain. The intervention was described. Each patient had a pretest, watched a 13 minute music video, and finally a post
test to determine if the music helped to relived their pain. Literature Review/Background
1.
Briefly state the clinical problem
that prompted the study.
The clinical problem in this study was chronic pain of adult patients who have intrathecal
pump placement. 2.
Discuss the data provided for the significance of the clinical problem,
and why you believe it is an important problem for nursing science. If you believe it is not an important problem, then explain why not.
The data that was provided in the article for the significance of the clinical problem was thorough. The article discusses the physical, mental, and social challenges that people with this kind of pump placement go through. It also discusses various techniques used to
help these individuals to cope with their pain. It goes on to describe the size of pump placement. All of these factors lead me to believe that this is an important issue in nursing science. 3.
Identify the major topics discussed in the background section and evaluate whether there were any missing ideas or topics.
The major topics that were discussed in the background section were that the study was made to see if relaxing music videos during pump access and refill would reduce pain. Another major topic was finding a non-expensive nursing intervention that would help to reduce pain. All the participants were cared for in the home. 4.
Briefly explain whether the background section included sources current at the time of the study (ie. within 5 years of publication).
The one source that was cited in the background section was from 2012 and the article was published in 2020. It was not within 5 years of the publication of the article. 5.
Discuss whether previous studies were critically evaluated by the study authors to provide a clear summary of the current knowledge about the problem of interest.
The previous study appears to have been critically evaluated by the study authors. They did provide a clear summary of current knowledge about the problem of interest. 6.
Evaluate whether the background section provided enough support for the current research study. In other words, whether gaps in research knowledge were clearly described. I do believe that the background section provided enough support for the current research
study. I do believe that gaps in research knowledge were clearly described. Research Purpose & Research Questions/Hypotheses
1.
State the study purpose and evaluate whether the purpose clearly addresses the gap in nursing knowledge identified in the background section.
The study purpose was clearly address at the beginning of the article. The purpose clearly
addresses the gap in nursing knowledge that is identified in the background section.
2.
If there are research questions and/or hypotheses, list them, and discuss whether they logically follow from the research problem and purpose. If questions/hypotheses were only implied, rather than explicitly stated, describe that.
The research question is that if relaxing music videos will help reduce pain in adults with chronic pain who have intrathecal pump placement. The research question does follow the research problem and purpose. The question and hypotheses were implied, I do not believe, nor did I read where they were explicitly stated. Theory Framework
1.
Describe the theory/framework that supported the study. List the important concepts in the theory framework as described by the authors.
The article states that the theoretical framework that supported the study was Roy’s Adaptation Model. One of the important concepts in the theory framework as described by the authors was the framework focuses on “impact of pain of physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. “
The other important concept was that a nurse could use the relaxing video to help reduce the pain of a patient with pain who has an intrathecal pump placement. 2.
Evaluate the clarity of the presentation of the framework. If it was vague or had missing elements, describe those.
The presentation of framework is clearly stated. I do not believe that it was vague or had any missing elements. 3.
Discuss how well the theory/framework concepts were clearly linked to the study variables (the things that were actually measured in the study).
The theory framework concepts do clearly link to the study because they both deal with pain. The things that were actually measured in the study were pain which was a main point of the framework. 1.
List the major study variables [NOT demographic variables]. Categorize them as research, independent, or dependent variables. The major study variables were relaxing music video which is an dependent variable
The person with pain would be a independent variable. 2.
List the demographic variables measured in the study, and any extraneous variables identified by the authors. Evaluate whether there are missing demographic variables, in your opinion.

Discuss, using the text, how you believe this case should be decided. Remember to
reference specific ethical principles from the text: "A 13 year old girl, suffering from
toxic shock syndrome, is sent directly from school to a local emergency room.
Treatment is ordered, including fever-reducing medication and a strong course of
intravenous antibiotics. The parents arrive just as the medication and equipment
arrive in the emergency room. They announce they are Christian Scientists and wish
to take their daughter home." The clinical approach to this case requires the
application of the procedure by which medical indications, patient preferences,
projected quality of life and contextual features be applied. How would you decide it

Cindy is a 17-year-old high school student. She leads an active social life, gets good
grades, and is a member of the track team. About two weeks ago she became ill with
what she thought was the flu.
Her signs and symptoms included sore throat, enlarged and tender lymph nodes in
her neck, inflamed tonsils, headache, fever, muscle aches and fatigue and loss of
appetite. She expected to feel better by now, but she still has many of the
symptoms. Her mother took Cindy to their family physician for evaluation.
Upon examination the physician notes that Cindy has swollen lymph nodes in her
neck and armpits, her spleen is enlarged. Based on her symptoms and examination
the physician diagnosed Cindy with the Epstein-Barr virus. He explained that there
is no specific cure, but that treatment…

The patient alleged that the defendant–physician fraudulently and negligently advised her that she had a brain tumor that required immediate surgery, that the physician negligently performed an unneeded craniotomy on her at the hospital, and that the physician had held staff surgical privileges at the hospital on a continuing basis. The plaintiff–patient further alleged several theories against the hospital. Underlying these was the contention that the hospital had sufficient prior information to be put on notice that the defendant–physician was an incompetent, overaggressive neurosurgeon with a history of performing unnecessary operations, particularly elective craniotomies. The court ordered the hospital to produce copies of all preoperative consultations, operative notes, interpretations of preoperative x-rays, and brain tissue analyses obtained on 140 patients. Included in the order were provisions to ensure the privacy of the patients. The hospital refused the records on the…
