The final chapter in Gawande’s book, Being Mortal:
Courage
What has been the overall theme in the book?
The overall theme of this book seems to be the modern medicine approach and how it
can be improved to better serve patients in need.
Has there been more than one theme?
There are several themes viewed in the book, including the value of conversation
around end of life care, autonomy and holistic approaches in medicine.
How has the book changed how you view your own mortality?
This book has helped me see the value of quality of life rather than quantity of life.
How has the book changed how you view medicine and your medical education?
This book has changed my idea of the medical world completely. Previously I had viewed the
medical world as nothing but a business after reading this book. I understand that there are
business aspects just like any other business but the health providers have a duty to play and a
role to commit.
