1A. Using the National Center for Complimentary and Integrated Health
(NCCIH) at https://nccih.nih.gov/, provide research about complementary
therapy.
Provide a summary overview of the therapy.
Complementary therapy is a non-mainstream approach used
together with conventional medicine. Complementary approaches
may include Nutritional (special diets, dietary supplements, herbs,
probiotics), Psychological (mindfulness), Physical) massage, spinal
manipulation), Combination of psychological and physical (tai chi,
yoga, acupuncture, massage therapy, spinal manipulation, art
therapy, music therapy, dance, mindfulness-based stress reduction)
(U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2023).
What evidence is there about providing care for patients of all
cultures.
Many complementary approaches originated in other countries
other than America. A lot of other cultures use complementary
approaches rather than medicine. The most important thing when
providing care for all cultures is ensuring the safety of using these
approaches. Many of these approaches should not be used in
replacement of medical attention. Some cultures may believe that
making complementary approaches is safer than other health
approaches.
Discuss how you would work with a patient to integrate the therapy
into his/her care plan.
When providing care for patients, one should always inform the patient of all
care options. I consistently implement the least invasive method first. Before
implementing any intervention, we should always ensure the benefits
outweigh the risks and ensure there are no contraindications or interactions.
We should always get the patient's input on how they feel about the therapy.
Patient education should be implemented, and after the patient fully
understands the therapy, it should start. We should gradually introduce
something new to patients.
1B. Using transcultural care concepts, provide evidence-based practice
guidelines that illustrate how linguistic challenges interfere with culturally
competent care.
Language barriers contribute to reducing both patient and medical provider
satisfaction, as well as communication between medical providers and
patients. Patients who face language barriers are more likely to consume
more healthcare services and experience more adverse events (Shamsi et
al., 2020). Studies indicate that language barriers contribute to medical
professionals’ incomplete understanding of patients’ situations, delayed
treatment or misdiagnoses, poor patient assessment, and incomplete
prescribed treatment. To overcome language barriers, some healthcare
institutions provide interpreter services; however, these services pose critical
challenges in access and financial burden (Shamsi et al., 2020).
What are the safety concerns for APRN providers?
The safety concern for APRN providers when dealing with language barriers
is always ensuring the patient understands the instructions to self-manage
their condition at home. Some patients are not always honest with the
providers about what’s going on or what medications they’re taking or have
taken. From personal experience, I have worked with ESL individuals who
didn’t understand what I was saying but shook their heads yes. By
experience, I ensured they understood by using the teach-back method.
