Copy and paste the following CDC website link
into a new window
http://www.cdc.gov/stroke/facts.htm
►This website provides lot's of
information on Strokes in the United States.
Read through the entire page of the link. First, what is
a Stroke? What are the most common signs/symptoms? Knowing the risk factors, are you at risk for a
Stroke? If so, feel free to share what factors place you at higher risk. Lastly, what statistics/impacts, did
you find most surprising?
Topic Option 2

: You are almost done with the class now,
congratulations!
Looking back on how you felt about medical terminology in week one, how do you feel
now? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What can you do to improve learning medical
terminology, even after this class has ended? Lastly, share at least one tip for success with your
classmates, of how you learned medical terminology these past few weeks.

A stroke happens when there is a blockage in the blood supply of a part of the brain or a rupture of an
artery. The consequence part of the brain gets damaged. A stroke is also called a brain attack, there are
two types of strokes. An ischemic stroke is when the blood is blocked creating a clot. Hemorrhagic is
when an artery ruptures or breaks within the brain leaking blood. (Stroke Facts | Cdc.gov, 2023). The
brain controls body functions (i.e. Chabner, 2020). Every lobe of the brain has a function. The lobes are
frontal, occipital, parietal, and temporal. In the frontal lobe, we have our behavior, personality, and
emotions. The occipital is our vision, the parietal body sensations, and special perception. The temporal
hearing, language, and speech. The movement is also found on the frontal right next to the parietal. That
is why when an individual has a stroke, they tend to lose some of their abilities. Some of the symptoms
included sudden numbness, confusion, double vision, issues walking, and severe headaches. There are
some factors that increase the chances of having a stroke including high blood pressure, high cholesterol,
diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. In addition, excessive tobacco, and alcohol usage and eating a diet
high in saturated fats, trans fat, and cholesterol (Stroke Facts | Cdc.gov, 2023). People with a hereditary
of family history also have a higher risk. Genetic disorders can cause a stroke like sickle cell disease. My
mom used to smoke, and she had high blood pressure, years ago she stopped smoking. I am glad she did
because it is said stroke is more common in women than male.
One shocking fact is that the chance of
having a stroke doubles every 10 years after age 55.
(Stroke Facts | Cdc.gov, 2023). Stroke is more
common in older adults. Having high blood pressure and obesity in my family makes me more cautious.
I
tried to exercise to prevent obesity. My dad is obese, and this has been one of the things that motivates
me to keep a healthy diet and stay active.

Doctor Martinez
A stroke requires emergency care. The healthcare provider may give an anticoagulant or blood-thinning
to the patient, one common blood thinner is aspirin or clopidogrel. As far as medication a medicine
called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is used intravenously to break up the blood clots that block
blood flow in the brain. It is said that tPA must be given within 4.5 hours after stroke symptoms.
(Treatment | NHLBI, NIH, 2023). Procedures such as thrombectomy which remove a blood clot from a
blood vessel. The advantage is that it reduces the damage to the brain and loss of body function when
removing the blood clot. The term "angioplasty" means using a balloon to stretch open a narrowed or
blocked artery. Angioplasty procedures are done by inserting a short wire mesh tube, which is a stent,
into the artery during the procedure. The stent is left in place permanently to allow blood to flow more
freely. (Website, 2022). When I work in an MRI facility, patients with stents can get an MRI after
approximately eight weeks after a stent is placed.

Response 2:
Hello Mrs. Cheri
I think we all had some challenges in the beginning of the class. Just the name of the class Anatomy &
Physiology with Terminology & Disease process can be intimidated. But I think how the class was
conducted and the breakdown of the topics helped me greatly to learn. I agree with you we have a big
responsibility as healthcare workers and at the same time during the last four weeks I’ve seen the
commitment with all of us to really learn and become great medical assisting graduates. I noticed that
we have respect, kindness, and compassion for patients. I really enjoyed the Keiser live sessions. I feel I
learned tons of things as well from the discussions. Again, as you mentioned memorizing is not an
effective learning technique. Real learning comes from reading as well as from referring to real-life
situations and the application of knowledge to our day-to-day performance. Many of us have a medical
background and as we escalate in our careers, we know that knowledge is going to make an impact
when we get to work with patients. I truly wish the best to all of you and all the students who are brave
to pursue education in the medical profession.

Hi Amanda
I just want to take the chance and congratulate you; this was the second class we took together. You
mentioned previously that you had no medical background, but I think you did a great job. The Keiser
live was definitely a great opportunity we had to learn, and you took advantage of that. I am sure you are
going to do great in the biology class as well. The greatest factor in learning is the desire and the
motivation to learn and you already have it. I am taking Medical Law and Ethics, so we won’t be together
in the next class. I wish you the best. We learned so much during the discussion. A lot of times I felt
overwhelmed to read all the chapters and the discussion helped me to reinforce my knowledge and to
see other students’ points of view.
There are so many things that I am taking from this course. After I
completed the post-test, I felt confident because I realized the knowledge is there in comparison to the
pre-test where I was answering the questions based on assumptions. Again, I wish you the best in your
upcoming classes.
