Introduction to Medical Surgical Nursing Evolution
The nursing practice today comprises of many different roles and responsibilities
essential to meet our society’s health care needs. According to the book
Medical Surgical
Nursing Assessment and Management
, “As a nurse, you offer experienced care to those
recovering from an illness or injury, advocate for patient’s rights, teach patient’s how to manage
their health, support patients and their loved ones during critical times, and help them navigate
the complex health care system” (
Lewis, Bucher, Heitkemper, & Harding 2017)
. In the
Introduction to Medical Surgical Nursing lecture class, at West Coast University, we are taught
how to examine the needs of the patient with alterations in health while acquiring the skills in
open lab and using the knowledge at the clinical site. The information and skills I grasped in this
course will offer me the familiarity and understanding necessary for my career as a nurse.
During my med surg theory class, I was introduced to many different concepts including
classifying priorities in the care of patients with alterations in health, identifying
interprofessional collaboration and team management needs of the patient, and examining the
pharmacologic, nutritional, developmental, and teaching needs of the patient. Medical surgical
nursing is the foundation of nursing of the ill. We were taught how to promote health, prevent
disease and help patients cope with their illness, diseases or aid in their recovery from surgery.
Throughout this course we put our critical thinking skills to use and learned about the disease
states, the body system, and how to act if something were to go wrong throughout the care.
I enjoyed this Medical Surgical Nursing course because it taught me essential information
and gave me the knowledge needed throughout my nursing career. I finished this semester

confident in all that I was taught. I was assigned to Health South Rehabilitation Center in
Homestead, Florida, where I was allowed the opportunity to practice some of the many different
skills I learned in lecture and the skills lab. I had the chance to assess the patients, to rehearse
therapeutic communication, to guarantee patient safety during the shift and to obtain vital signs. I
will use the knowledge that I have gained from this semester to learn and grow as a future
registered nurse.
