1. Discuss why you think essential oils are gaining popularity? I think that essential oils became popular because people realized that, with essential oils, they could cure certain illnesses, like a cold at home. Oftentimes this could be done without a doctor. 2. From your research, discuss a health claim regarding essential oils that you learned about that surprised you the most. Explain why you believe or don’t believe the claims being made and why. The most surprising thing that I learned about essential oils is that if you mix lavender and frankincense together, it can help with cuts and bruises. I believe that essential oils do work. The reason I believe this is because when I first heard of essential oils I was skeptical, until I used them to help with my cold. After a few days it went away and I never had to go and see a physician. 3. Why do you think physicians don’t promote alternative medicines such as essential oils in their offices? I think that physicians do not promote alternative medicine because they want to use medicine that's proven to work. Most physicians believe that they can cure the person effectively using modern medicine. 4. Describe another natural remedy you came across in your research or that your family has used besides essential oils? I came across something called chiropractic medicine. This type of medicine is supposed to keep your energy in line by keeping your spine in line. I don't use this type of medicine, because I don't believe in the body's “energy”. 5. Imagine that you are an independent essential oils sales representative and you wholeheartedly believe in the value of using oils for different reasons. Your sister is considering using oils for a few health issues like dry skin and asthma complications, as well as for air purification and cleaning. However, she isn’t totally sold on their effectiveness. What would you say to her? How would you convince her of the usefulness of oils? Use specific examples/information from your research and the article. I would describe my own personal experience as someone who has struggled with both asthma and dry skin and used essential oils to treat both issues at hand and seen a major difference. I would present to her before and after pictures of clients skin including mine who saw a difference. I would explain how oils can help relieve dry skin because the skin is deprived of oils. I would give the example of Vick’s Vap-O-Rub that has essential oils in it too, specifically eucalyptus, and there is some evidence that eucalyptus can help with respiratory symptoms. 6. Similar to the conversation that you considered regarding the effectiveness of oils, imagine that the roles are reversed and your sister is the essential oils enthusiast and you are the skeptic. You are concerned that your sister is relying too heavily on essential oils when you feel she should be seeking medical and pharmaceutical help for her skin irritation and asthma complications. What would you say to her to try and convince her to
seek medical help as opposed to relying solely on essential oils? Use specific examples/information from your research and the article. I would first explain how there is no scientific evidence that essential oils work as stated in the article. I would describe as stated in the article that essential oils may or may not work as advertised. It’s very hard to tell because so little actual research has been done on them. Therefore she cannot rely solely on them and should seek medical attention because the essential oils aren’t making a difference and perhaps could be causing it to worsen.
