Assessment Description
Personalized medicine is an emerging practice that uses an individual's genetic profile
to guide decisions made in regard to prevention, diagnosis, and treatments.
Knowledge of the patient's genetic profile aids providers in selecting therapies.
Without this information, providers cannot properly inform a patient of appropriate
treatments. How would you, as a DNP-prepared nurse, advocate for a patient who has
opposing views compared to yours? Using Christian principles how would you navigate
this situation to guarantee you will be able to advocate for the patient to make an
autonomous genetic decision?
Personalized medicine is an emerging practice as more information supports the need for tailoring
medicine towards the needs of the individual. New prescription drugs are being manufactured to what
seems to be on a daily basis. The pharmaceutical industry continues to produce new medications and
the demand continues to follow. As more people have access to prescription drugs now more than ever,
it is resulting in unintended consequences of adverse effects and death (
Behavioral Health Centers,
2022). This increase in prescription drug misuse is possible because of the greater accessibility.
The Mayo Clinic revealed that 70% of Americans take at least one prescription drug while more
than half take two, and 20% take five or more (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and
Research, 2018). Not only is accessibility a problem, but so is the interaction with certain
medications on individuals. An individual’s genetic profile can be a guide to prevention,
diagnosis, and treatment decisions. It is known that application of genomics to personalized
medical care in the form of pharmacogenomics is useful. The knowledge of a patient’s genetic
profile can help providers better navigate prescription of therapeutics in a more accurate manner.
Without genetic information, providers are subjected to their current state of practice which is to
generalize prescription based on how it may affect the majority of the population.
A way a DNP-
prepared nurse can advocate for their patient who has opposing views in the manner is to come to an
agreement. Patients may be hesitant or have an opposing view because of previous experience or past
trauma. The best thing the DNP-prepared nurse can do is to ensure safety. Safety and doing no harm is
within the Christian principles. By allowing the vulnerable patient to adjust and trust the clinician, it
should help to navigate the difficult decision regarding autonomous genetics. Gaining the patient’s trust
will allow him or her to be more receptive to education and the best treatment modality. Each person
has a genetic profile that differs in genetic makeup.
