Assessment Description
Personalized medicine is an emerging practice that uses an individual's genetic profile
to guide decisions made in regard to prevention, diagnosis, and treatments.
Knowledge of the patient's genetic profile aids providers in selecting therapies.
Without this information, providers cannot properly inform a patient of appropriate
treatments. How would you, as a DNP-prepared nurse, advocate for a patient who has
opposing views compared to yours? Using Christian principles how would you navigate
this situation to guarantee you will be able to advocate for the patient to make an
autonomous genetic decision?
Hello,
Personalized medicine is an emerging practice in medicine. This new wave uses an individual’s genetic
makeup to guide decisions regarding prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. the information
and knowledge gained from a patient’s genetic profile can help providers select the proper medication or
therapy to administer in using the proper dose and regimen (
National Human Genome Research
Institute, 2023). This conversion from a “one size fits all” approach to an individualized
approach is much needed. Most human genes are the same, however, the ones that differ creates
this idea of targeted intervention. Genomics is playing a huge role in the emergence of
personalized medicine. It allows providers added information on a molecular level to see the
differences with one individual and the norm that medications or treatments are based upon. This
information allows the opportunity for making predictions about disease that can adopt or adjust
their treatment plan.
Thank you for your post.
