Identify the reasons why a healthcare provider
may decide to give medication to a child with ASD
When the behavior poses a physical risk of
harm to the individual or others, w
hen the
behavior interferes with learning and skill
acquisition, when the behavior causes
significant stress to family members and
educational personnel so as to interfere with
their functioning, wen behavior strategies
alone do not adequately improve the behavior
symptoms.
Identify medications that are commonly used to
treat different types of behavioral and medical
symptoms and their side effects
Concerta, Ritalin - side effects- loss of
appetite, insomnia, headache, or weight loss.
Describe the research on using medications to
treat symptoms of autism
For many of the medications that may be used
for children with ASD, studies have been
conducted on effects and side effects on
adults and, in some cases, children without
ASD. Very few medications have been
researched directly on children with ASD. As
a result, it is difficult to know how children
with ASD may respond to medications.
Despite a current lack of research, be
encouraged that studies on the use of other
medications for children with ASD are
ongoing.
What are some of the things a physician might
want to pursue in collaboration with educators
when prescribing medication for behavior?
Monitor effects and side effects of the
medication and monitor outcomes, Review
the child‘s functioning from time to time,
Utilize a multidisciplinary approach where
various team members contribute to decision
making.
Tell how to maximize communication and
collaboration with medical providers
If a child has received an evaluation from a
medical professional, it is helpful to
communicate the results either via a copy of
the report or a signed release of information
so that the teachers and education
professionals who work with the child can
stay informed on the child‘s medical care.
What is informed consent and why is this
important?
Informed consent is a process of
communication between you and your health
care provider that often leads to agreement or
permission for care, treatment, or services.
Every patient has the right to get information
and ask questions before procedures and
treatments
What are some of the challenges of individuals
with Autism when taking or when giving them
medication?
dealing with their side effects or being able to
help them understand what medication they are
taking and why.
How Should Educators, Parents, and Health
Professionals Collaborate? Why is this important?
They should collaborate through medical
evaluations, reviewing data, checking in with
medications and all share the same information
with each other. This is important so that
everyone is on the same page and understands.
