Module 4 Case Study Identify the incorrect medication/drug classification/treatment and explain why it is incorrect. Prescribing the anticholinergic drug to cure Alzheimer’s is not the correct treatment plan. This is because not only is there no known cure for Alzheimer's, but this drug classification is also known to increase the risk of Alzheimer's. What drug classification would you use instead? Why? Instead of using anticholinergic drugs to treat Alzheimer’s, the doctor should have prescribed either an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor or a NMDA receptor antagonist. Both of these drug classifications are the only ones approved to help treat Alzheimer’s. Provide an example of a generic medication from each drug classification. How would each of the medications/treatments in the scenario act on the patient's body? Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor – donepezil; This drug prevents the enzyme acetylcholinesterase from breaking down acetylcholine in the brain. This helps to temporarily alleviate or stabilize some symptoms of Alzheimer's. NMDA receptor antagonist – memantine; This drug protects the brain cells by blocking the effects of excess glutamate.
