Pros of each site
MedlinePlus: https://medlineplus.gov/languages/medicines.html
The pros of MedlinePlus are that it is easy to navigate and find the information. It also offers
multiple translations for the user, like Arabic, Chinese (Simplified, Mandarin dialect), Chinese
(Traditional, Cantonese dialect), Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Nepali, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and
Vietnamese. The site is informative and provides detailed information about the medicine and
diagnoses.
NAMI: https://www.nami.org/About-Mental-Illness/Treatments/Mental-Health-Medications
The pros of NAMI are that it offers information about educational programs and a toll-free
helpline. NAMI is known for advocating for individuals and families affected by mental illness;
the federal government also funds it (NAMI,2002). NAMI contains essential information about
health concerns, side effects, and instructions on taking medication properly.
Cons of each site
MedlinePlus:
https://medlineplus.gov/languages/medicines.html
NAMI: https://www.nami.org/About-Mental-Illness/Treatments/Mental-Health-Medications
The cons of MedlinePlus AND NAMI are promoting that self-diagnosing could lead to
misdiagnoses. It could become a problem when the person needs to consult a doctor when
needed and relies on information from a site. Although the site is reputable, it is always best to
consult a doctor with any medical concern before relying on a website. Also, it could be
challenging for some people to maneuver the site if they are not adequately trained or have no
technology experience.
Site Information
MedlinePlus retrieves information from the National Institute of Health, other federal
government agencies, and non-government websites
(MedlinePlus, 2020)
. The site is divided
into sections that include the description of the organization, mission statement, structure,
governance, and policies. The site must abide by its mission statement to provide accurate patient
and family information. There are only reliable sources linked to the site.
NAMI retrieves information from researchers conducting studies on their programs and
presentations to measure their effectiveness (NAMI,2002). Since the federal government funds
NAMI, they get many resources from individual donors, contributors, sponsorships, foundations,
dues, grants events, and other partnerships (NAMI,2002).
Academic and Reputable Site
MedlinePlus is an academic and reputable site because it provides accurate, evidence-based
information and is trustworthy and transparent. The site also publishes a list of advisory board
members with health-related expertise. NAMI is considered an academic and reputable site
based on conducted research and cited information.
Comparison between sites
What I noticed different from each site when entering the same medication, like diazepam, was
that NAMI listed brand name medications in alphabetical order along with generic names, and
MedlinePlus provided a ton of information like “why is the medication prescribed? How should
this medicine be used? Other uses for this medicine, what special precautions should I follow?
What special dietary instructions should I follow? Furthermore, what should I do if I forget a
dose?
(MedlinePlus, 2020).
MedlinePlus also included brand names and what to do in case of an
overdose. Both sites included helpful information in one location.
