Trauma-Informed Coping Strategies Mindfulness Toolbox The Mindfulness Toolbox is a collection of mindfulness coping strategies that can be used to focus a person’s mental awareness on the present moment. Mindfulness strategies can include the 5,4,3,2,1 grounding exercise, deep breathing, etc. The 5,4,3,2,1 grounding exercise requires the person to identify 5 things they can see, 4 things they can touch, three things then can hear, two things they can smell, and one thing they can taste. Deep breathing can be done in various counts. The most common is the 4-4-4 breathing . This means that the person breathes through their nose for 4 seconds, holds for 4 seconds, and releases the breath through the mouth for four seconds. This should be completed for at least two minutes or until the person feels calm. Journaling Daily Journaling can be an effective way to express emotions and to communicate about past traumatic events if one struggles with verbally expressing these events and associated emotions to others. Exercise Exercising for at least 30 minutes a day can assist with managing stress, anxiety, and depression which can all occur when having traumatic experiences. A person should select a few exercises that they enjoy that they can do daily. This can include walking, jogging, swimming, dancing, weightlifting, playing sports, etc.

Reflection of Specialized Population When reviewing potential ideas for creating a resource packet, trauma-informed crisis services felt like the right choice. In my previous job experiences, I have provided support services to children and families who have experienced severe and complex trauma. This has led to a passion in wanting to find ways to advocate and support for this specialized population for my future career. The first step is knowing what resources are currently available and then evaluating ways to improve these services to meet the needs and provide prevention for this specialized population. Summarization of Cultural Considerations When considering cultural implications for this crisis resource packet, considerations such as gender, age, and socioeconomic status were covered in this resource packet. Upon conducting research, there was limited information on religious/spiritual supports, and supports related to ethnic identities. This could be something to consider with wanting to improve services in the St. Louis Area. Ethical Obligations to Sharing Resources The American Counseling Association requires counselors to provide resources that do not impose the values or beliefs of the therapist onto the client (ACA, 2014). Counselors should ensure that resources consider the cultural identity of the client and maintain the integrity of their
cultural identity (ACA, 2014). Resources should not cause undue harm to the client and should encourage positive development and growth (ACA, 2014).
