Question 1: Discuss the federal role in health policy.
When discussing the role in which the federal government plays in healthcare it is a major one. The federal government not only regulates our drugs and food, funding for research programs, prevention care, and homeland security. The most notable role when thinking about federal government and healthcare is Medicare and Medicaid. “Over the past half-century from the establishment of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965—ensuring access to insurance coverage for a large portion of the U.S. population” (Straube, 2013). The Food and Drug Administration is another federal-run agency that comes to mind. Started in 1848, “it is the oldest comprehensive consumer protection agency in the U.S. federal government” (FDA, 2018). At the federal level, the government’s goal is to develop policies and organizations to uphold the policies put in place.
Question 2: Who are the demanders and suppliers of health policies? What motivates each in the political marketplace?
The demander of health policies can be your everyday person who views the policies to be desirable. Several factors would motivate the demander such as self-interest, better care for a loved one, or political standing. The suppliers of health policies are the different branches of the government, the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. There are a few motivators when it comes to the supplier, to maximize public interest and the other is self-interest. “To a large extent, this intense interest in the motivations of policy suppliers reflects the desire by policy demanders for some effective means to pursue their desired policies by exerting influence over the suppliers” (Sadler, 2023). Both parties are motivated by similar goals when it comes to health
policies, but overall, the supplier has the power to make the change happen.
