A: Description of local and subpopulation
The community I have chosen is Olathe. This city is a part of Johnson County, which is the most populated County in Kansas (Johnson County Kansas, 2023). Olathe is comprised of roughly 143,014 individuals as of July 1, 2021 (United States Census Bureau, 2023). Of these individuals, 50.2% are female, and 49.8% are male, which is comprised of 6.5% being 5 years of
age or younger, 27.6% being 18 years of age or younger, and 11.9% being 65 or older. The racial
diversity within this community is mainly comprised of 4 subpopulations: White, alone non-
Hispanic (74.9%), Hispanic (11.3%), African America (5.8%), and Asian (4.2%). These subpopulations combined have a median income of $100,849 annually with 6% living in poverty. 94.1% of the community aged 25 and older possess a high school diploma or higher, and 50.2% aged 25 and older possess a Bachelor’s Degree or higher (United States Census Bureau, 2023). According to the Olathe Chamber of Commerce, this area boasts the “fastest growing major job markets in the Midwest” (Olathe Chamber of Commerce, 2023). Within the growing community, the leading employers having 2,000 or more individuals include: Farmers Insurance, Garmin International, Johnson County Government, Olathe Medical Center, and the Olathe Public Schools (Olathe Chamber of Commerce, 2023).
With so many opportunities for education and employment, the city utilizes privately owned vehicles as their primary source of transportation at 80.2% (DATA USA, 2023). It is reported that roughly 9.68% of individuals work from home, while 8.18% utilize carpooling. Other forms of transportation noted within the community are: bicycling, public transit, taxi, walking, and publicly provided motorized scooters in its down town area. With these various

forms of transportation, those living around the community have access to a multitude of food sources including but not limited to: grocery stores (Walmart, Target, Price-Chopper, ALDI, Hy-
Vee, Whole Foods, Hen House, Asian Food Marker, El Guero Novedades, and Kanza Mediterranean Market), and fast food (McDonalds, Sonic, Chipotle, Wendy’s, Applebee’s, Austin’s Bar and Grill, and many local establishments and food trucks). With so many individuals, local law enforcement and health care are a must. Olathe’s crime rate is below the national average at 22.63 per 1,000 residents (CrimeGrade.org, 2023). Of the reported crimes, 2.6% are considered violent crimes (assault, robbery, rape and murder) , 15.22% are property crimes (theft, vehicle theft, burglary, and arson), and 4.819% fall into their “other” category which include (kidnapping, drug crimes, vandalism, identity theft, and animal cruelty (CrimeGrade.org, 2023). Olathe’s health system provides adequate medical access to residents with a local Hospital, urgent care centers, family practice offices, and houses the Johnson County Health Department. Of the 143,014 individuals, 92.8% have health coverage. This can be further broken down with 67.8% on employee plan, 5.92% on Medicaid, 8.81% on Medicare, 9.58% non-group plans, and 0.721% on VA plans (DATA USA, 2023). The subpopulation that I will be exploring within this community are individuals affected by depression. After careful review of the medical concerns affecting the individuals residing in Olathe, it was apparent that medical concerns such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and respiratory disease were all below the state of Kansas average. Two items were not, depression and adult binge drinking ( Conduent Healthy Communities Institute, 2023). Of the 143,014 individuals residing in Olathe, approximately 18.1% are reported to have a diagnosis of depression, thus being an indicator in the State’s suicide rates exceeding those of the national average ( Conduent Healthy Communities Institute, 2023). This subpopulation primarily consists

of females between the ages of 18-34 (Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services, 2022). Of this subpopulation, the majority have less than a high school education and bring home
between $15,000-$34,000 a year.
Environmental Concerns
The City of Olathe prides itself in having a proactive relationship with the environment. While the city houses many individuals, businesses, and forms of transportation, the environmental concerns are relatively low. At this time, there is a 2040 initiative focusing on the resident’s quality of life. The city as well as the county are working toward more self-sustainable
resources. The current environmental initiatives include: “air quality compliance, regulating trash
and recycle haulers and facilities, providing household hazardous waste and paint collection, septic systems and pool safety, and providing education and outreach on a wide range of environmental issues” (Johnson County Kansas, 2023). While seeing a counselor for your mental health needs and taking medications as prescribed can aid in treating depression environmental factors can help as well. Experts report that 50 minutes of exercise (walking, running, biking, etc.) in a natural or urban environment decrease the symptoms of depression, and can be used as a healthy coping mechanism for individuals (Vicent Balanzá-Martínez, 2022).
Olathe sports hundreds of miles of outdoor natural park trails that help to support the residents. In addition, it is host to over 50 indoor exercise establishments. SDOH. The social determinant of health affecting the subpopulation of young women in Olathe is depression. Compared to the national average Olathe has increasingly higher rates of depression, while both mirror each other affecting females 18 and over with a higher rate in those with 2 or more ethnicities (Major Depression, 2022). Due to the increasing number of individuals reporting depression in their youth and majority being 18 and older local schools

have begun mental health initiatives in elementary, middle and high school across Olathe. Data suggests that this issue is a national concern with growing impacts on individuals residing within
Olathe. The largest contributor to depression is the experience of a traumatic or stressful event including abuse or loss of a loved one. In addition, research suggests that having a family history
of depression, personal drug or alcohol use, illnesses and medications can also contribute to those experiencing depression (CDC, 2022). Some controversial concerns amongst those within the community include involuntary commitment of individuals into psychiatric care with forced medications (DRC, 2023). It is my personal opinion that the majority of individuals in the community are concerned with the price it costs to have adequate mental health care. On average
session run $60-$120 a session causing a strain and additional stress for individuals needing help
with their depression. Currently, Heart failure is the leading cause of admission to Olathe Medical Center (Olathe Medical Center, 2023). Bases upon the research provided it is my opinion that the quality of life for the residents of Olathe is being most affected by depression, precipitated by a high stress work and home life, with various contributing factors such as child birth, corporate jobs, and private event trauma. Resources (2). While this community has ample stressors, it also boasts many resources to aid in the resident’s mental health. As previously noted, the community offers access to a variety of outdoor walking trails, community exercise facilities, and wellness sites. In addition, Olathe is host to Johnson County Health Department, as well as Cottonwood Springs Mental Health Facility, and a multitude of therapy services for individual and family counseling. Resources that would be beneficial to those residing in Olathe with depression would be treatment centers for individuals between the ages of 18 and 21 and wide spread education for the residents of groups and therapies offered within the community. Providers do not screen for

depression, and an annual mental health check up is not covered on insurance plans. If individuals had the opportunity to see a psychiatrist annually for an evaluation for services it may help individuals come forward and express a desire or identify a need for treatment. This would also aid in removing the stigma against Mental Health. My evidence based intervention to address the gap between the available healthcare resources and the resources needed to address depression/ mental health needs in my community are to initiate annual mental health screenings for all covered individuals. It is recommended the women see their OBGYN annually, their physician annually, and their dentist every 6 months, however, there is no precedent to have an appointment annually with a psychiatrist for preventative screenings and ongoing care related to depression and mental illness. Access to mental health evaluations and support would provide individuals experiencing depression or other mental illness an opportunity to see a psychiatrist for screening every 6 to 12 months free of cost and encourage regular participation in psychiatric services if indicated (John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd, 2023).
