Week 11 Learning Outcomes November 21, 2022 LO 34-1 How is health psychology a union between medicine and psychology?
Health psychology is a union between medicine and psychology because of how the field of health psychology is considered that psychology can be applied to medical problems and their prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Meaning if I were to search options for a medical problem, I could choose psychology compared to another option. LO 34-2 What is stress? How does it affect us, and how can we best cope with it? Stress is a response the body produces in response to challenging or threatening conditions. Personally, I have experienced a great amount of stress at one time, and it affected me in a way a sickness would, chills and fevers, body aches. Stress affects us in multiple ways producing immediate reactions, short term, and long term. There are many ways to cope with stress, not all may work for a particular individual person, I like to take a step back from my problems when I am stressed out. LO 35-1 How do psychological factors affect health-related problems such as coronary heart disease, cancer, and smoking? Psychological factors affect health related problems from behavior such as type A behavior of hostility. Hostility is a type of behavior that includes competitiveness, time urgency, and feeling driven. Individuals' attitudes and emotions can play a role in their health that can affect cancer from links to the immune system. Smoking is a preventable cause for health problems, it is extremely difficult to quit being addictive. Most individuals can manage their psychological factors that can affect their health. LO 36-1 How do our interactions with physicians affect our health and compliance with medical treatment? Interactions with physicians affect individuals' health and compliance with medical treatment by pushing them away from receiving diagnosis or treatment from a physician's high social prestige and technicality of medical information. If my doctor were talking in excessive medical terms that are unknown to me it would scare me, pushing me away from going to medical treatment. LO 36-2 How does a sense of well-being develop? A sense of well-being develops from the measure of how happy someone is. Individuals with a high sense of well-being have an increased sense of control and optimism, with a supportive network of close relationships. I am currently in a comfortable state in my life right now so therefore I have a good sense of my own well-being.
