As you learned in Medical Coding I, there are 4 major medical coding systems in use
today. In this discussion board you are to differentiate the ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems. Make sure your post answers these questions for each system:
What is it used for?
Who publishes/controls the content?
How often and when is it updated?
Give at least one example code and definition for each system.
ICD-10-CM is a compilation of diagnosis codes for providers and facilities and stands
for the International Classification of Diseases, 10
th
revision, Clinical Modification. ICD-10-CM codes are used for all healthcare settings to code and classify diseases, injuries, symptoms, and other health conditions. While these codes are used internationally, the US is controlled by the National Center for Health Statistics which is a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The ICD-10-CM is updated annually on October 1
st
. Both AAPC and AHIMA publish the book. Example: H60.12 is cellulitis of left external ear
ICD-10-PCS stands for the International Classification of Diseases, 10
th
revision, Procedure Coding System, and is only used for hospital inpatient procedure coding. This content is controlled by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is updated annually on October 1
st
. The AAPC and AHIMA publishes the book.
Example: 0UT90ZZ is the resection of the uterus, open approach with no device or qualifier (typically done during an open approach hysterectomy)
CPT stands for Current Procedural Terminology and includes medical, surgical, and diagnostic services. This content is controlled by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is updated annually on January 1
st, , however, there are quarterly updates. It is published by the American Medical Association. Example: 01990 is physiological support for harvesting of organ(s) from brain-dead patient. This means the anesthesiologist provided anesthesia during organ removal.
HCPCS stands for Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System and is used for coding medical supplies and services not included in the CPT. This content is controlled by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is updated annually on January 1
st
, however, there are quarterly updates. The AAPC publishes the book. Example: V2020 is used when frames (for glasses) are purchased.
