Community Mental Health Research Report
The first article that I reviewed focused on the treatment of Transgendered patients, and what they felt was and was not being addressed during their treatments. The study found that “Desire to treat transgendered patients respectfully but admitted discomfort and lack of tools for specific interviewing/assessments. Experience with a range of transgendered patients, but lack of information on distinctions among transgendered experiences, Restrictions based on time constraints that create an overarching barrier in building trusting relationships with clients, and trusting relationships are integral to quality care, Concern and frustration with lack of information, studies and research, Concern and frustration with lack of treatment guidelines, (or ability to access them), referral contacts and ways to advocate for transgender clients, Belief that training by transgendered people themselves was an essential teaching element.” (Lurie, 2005). I think that the biggest takeaway I got from this study was that not only do providers and agencies need to conduct needs assessments as much as possible, but they also need to make sure that the needs assessment is done in a manner that is effective and appropriate for their target population. However, conducting a needs assessment can be an effective tool in giving voices to populations that may feel unheard even in their own treatment. The second study that I chose to look into observed the mental health of graduate level students. The study found that over half of all questioned graduate level students had experienced some sort of anxiety or stress related problems while in their courses. A study like this would be a great opportunity to observe ways for those students to cope and deal with their stress as the numbers do not really give any sort of characteristics but just show relationships or trends.
Conducting a needs assessment is a vital step in improving community resources. It helps identify where there may be gaps or areas for growth for agencies. However, there are steps that must be taken for a needs assessment to be effective. First off, researchers must define the purpose of the needs assessment. Are you trying to improve, add, or adjust services that are given? Are you trying to advocate for new resources to come to the area? These are questions that must be answered in order to find the direction that you wish to take with the needs assessment. Secondly, researchers must identify who the stakeholders are. This may include community members, local government officials, service providers, non-profit organizations, and other relevant parties. Identifying stakeholders will help with ensuring accurate, comprehensive, and diverse feedback. Thirdly, you must collect your data. Gather existing data and information related to the services in your community. This may include census data, government reports, health records, educational statistics, community surveys, and other relevant sources. Analyze this data to identify any existing trends, challenges, or gaps in services. Fourthly, it is beneficial to conduct surveys and interviews. Design and distribute surveys to community members to gather their perspectives and experiences. Then analyzing the data. Once the data has been collected, analyze it. Look for common themes, trends, and patterns that emerge from the responses. Identify the priority areas where services are lacking or need improvement. This analysis will help inform the decision-making process and prioritize resources effectively. After analysis you should then develop an action plan based on the findings, develop an action plan that outlines the steps to address the identified needs. Prioritize the actions based on feasibility, impact, and available resources. Once the action plan has been created, you can then implement the action plan and monitor the efficacy. After implementation, it is time to evaluate and continually refine the methods to ensure efficacy. In my proposed study, since I would want to study post-secondary readiness I would want to utilize qualitative data. Things such as what they are doing after high school, did they feel ready, and what could we have done as a school to better prepare them for life after high school. Quantities that would be used are things such as who is employed in their desired fields after high school or general employment statistics of alumni.
