Interdisciplinary Educations effects on Education Efficiency
Advantages
Healthcare professionals start building relationships while in school
Fewer College classes needed to teach the same material
Disadvantages
Could learn unnecessary materials
College students may have to travel to other colleges to collaborate
Why Would Colleges Change now?
What is the incentive for colleges?
Government and education boards needs to push for interdisciplinary educations
Government could offer reimbursements/funding to push the movement
Change education requirements
Shortage of Physicians in Rural Areas
“Number of physicians practicing in rural areas fell by 1,400” (Legott, 2019)
Contributing factor: Location of Residency Programs

Rural Training Tracks (RRTs)
Rural Training Tracks (RTTs) is one solution to get more physicians in rural areas.
More than half of all RTT graduates practice in rural areas (Legott, 2019).
Lack of RTT programs due to funding
Medicare funding is a disadvantage to rural areas
Small Resident Program Size
RTTs tend to be small in numbers
Rural areas lack variety with fewer patients
Vulnerable to budget cuts
More prone to outdated equipment and facilities
Changing Focus to Preventative Medicine

Medical Schools Approach to Education Needs to Change
Specialty physicians make more than primary physicians
Helps pay off debt sooner
Negative stigma in medical school to be a primary care physicians
44% of students worry primary care physicians wont always have a job (Beverly et al., 2016)
Conclusion
Interdisciplinary education opportunities could allow for lower healthcare costs, better patient satisfaction, and overall better respect between healthcare groups
Establishing more residency programs in rural areas could help the physician shortage
Medical schools need to ease worry to prospective students that primary care physicians are here to stay and are as respected as specialty physicians
