The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) website offers information on various complementary, alternative, or integrative healthcare modalities. Complementary medicine uses a non-mainstream approach in combination with conventional medicine to manage a condition. In contrast, alternative medicine utilizes non-mainstream methods instead of standard medicine to manage a condition (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 2021). Participating in integrative healthcare enables an individual to incorporate both conventional and complementary approaches to manage health holistically (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 2021). The Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) model provides the framework for experimental learning and change evaluation (Connelly, 2021). After reading more about the PDSA model, I realized I had utilized this model when deciding to incorporate complementary medical approaches such as massage therapy and chiropractic manipulation to manage my chronic neck pain. My neck pain became excruciating when I began nursing school in 2016. When taking NSAIDs was no longer relieving my pain, I went to my doctor and was offered muscle relaxers. After trying the medications and still having pain, I contemplated different pain relief methods. I devised a plan to integrate complementary healthcare modalities to obtain pain relief. In my planning phase, I decided to try massage therapy and chiropractic manipulation for chronic neck pain. idoctor about reliable chiropractors in our area. The research indicated that incorporating complementary and alternative medicine has been found to reduce pain, improve function, and decrease healthcare costs (Mi-Hyon Cho et al., 2021) . Based on my research and my doctor's recommendation, I finally made an appointment with a chiropractor. He took x-rays of my neck and performed a thorough physical evaluation. He performed my first adjustment on the next visit, and I had immediate symptom relief. I then entered the study phase, evaluating the outcomes compared with my predictions before implementing the complementary modalities (Connelly, 2021). I began monthly neck and shoulder adjustments in addition to a medical deep tissue massage every two months to evaluate how well the interventions worked and if the interventions would remain effective over time (Connelly, 2021). After six months, I concluded that integrating chiropractic manipulation and massage with medications was the best solution to manage my chronic neck pain. Reference: Connelly, L. M. (2021).
