A1: Explanation of trend related to department According to the “
Records waiting to be dropped from DNFB
”
spreadsheet, there are a few trends of note. First, the department that would be most discharged not final billed patients is cardio with a total of 25. Neurology has 14 patients waiting to be billed, Pediatrics has 13 obstetrics has 10 and nephrology has eight. Next, if we look at the amount of money pending per department, we see that once again cardiology leads the way with $4,289,456.95 waiting to be billed. Next, we see neurology with a total of $1,233059.28 Pediatrics with $582,722.69, nephrology with a total of $284,843.62 and finally obstetrics with $279,094.96. Now if we look at the physicians who have patients waiting to be billed with the longest amount of time since discharge, we see Dr. Hsieh from neurology whose patient was discharged 98 days ago, Dr. Reynoso from pediatrics whose patient was discharged 90 days ago, and Dr. Yen of neurology whose patient was discharged 89 days ago. The insurance companies of the patients are split evenly with 16 patients having Medicaid, 15 with Medicare, 14 carrying Tricare, 12 with commercial insurance, 12 with BCBS, and one with VA (Veterans Affairs) insurance. Finally, if we look at the 18 readmissions, we see that twelve of those came from cardiology, two from Pediatrics, two from nephrology, one from neurology, and one from obstetrics. A2: Identification of 2 Physicians with the highest pending dollar amount The first physician and the one with the highest pending dollar amount is Dr. Abboud of cardiology. His two patients have a total pending amount of $1,547,604.67. The physician with the second highest pending amount is Dr. Carpenter, also from Cardiology. His one patient has a pending total amount of $768,274.87.

A3. Relationship between readmits and diagnosis codes. One code that was seen the most and readmissions was code 133.9 with a primary diagnosis of acute and subacute endocarditis, unspecified. This code was seen three times and made up 25% of cardiology’s readmissions. While it is difficult to determine what other factors could have played a role such as length of hospital stay, complications, or even if their stays overlapped, we can see from the spreadsheet that the only thing these patients have in common is their diagnosis.
A4: Analysis of Financial Impact. The pending final bills have $6,669,177.50. If we assume that this spreadsheet is for a three-month period based on the days since discharge this would give us an approximate amount of a whopping $2,667,671,000.00 of pending billing per year.
If we look at the two doctors with the highest pending final bill amount Dr. Abboud would be over 6,190,418.68 and Dr. Hsien total per year could be $2,465,789,48. Now with this being said Dr. Abboud’s patients have only been discharged for three and nine days so it is fair to assume that he does not have a habit of letting billing fall to the wayside whereas Dr Hsieh’s patients have been discharged 98 and 30 days ago. This could make the argument that Dr. Hsieh may need to be spoken to about why his patient accounts cannot be billed. Readmissions make up 18 of the 70 patient accounts and account for $2286,791.06.
