Clinical Field Experience B: Technology in Social Studies
For this clinical experience, I once again had the opportunity to observe Mrs. Andrade's 5th-grade class. She was continuing her lesson on the landmark units. I was very fortunate that she was starting a review using a technology resource. The technology resource that she was using was the amazing Kahoot. The different questions displayed a historical US landmark with multiple choices of the title landmark. The students had to choose which landmark was being shown. She also had additional questions that included facts about the United States historical landmarks in which the students had to match the landmark with the facts that were given. This technology resource was very engaging for the classroom because Kahoot is a fantastic review. It
is entertaining, and because it is a competition, game-like resource, the students enjoy it.
I believe the DOK level 1 was used because she had the students recall facts. I also think that the DOK level 3 was also seen. This is because students were making connections with concepts of landmarks and facts that the teacher was providing.
Another type of technology used could have been using iPads to see different videos about the history of these landmarks. For this lesson, the teacher did a great job ensuring the safe,
legal, and ethical use of technology and information from this resource because she was in charge of it. She did it as a classroom whole so she could observe what everybody was on. Also, she took the time to tell them to follow what she was doing and no individual activities on the computers.
This observation was terrific because I have always been a fan of using some technology to help further the content of a lesson. I believe that the students understood and retained more because of the form of engagement that was used in this content. In my future classroom, I plan
on using the resources of Kahoot because it is a classroom favorite and a good strategy technique
to get them engaged to learn.
