Resource: Ch. 15 to 17 of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down . Due Thursday Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: Is it immoral or insensitive to set evidence-based medical practice over other cultural medical beliefs? Fadiman compares the Hmong to a visual perception puzzle (p. 237). Do you agree or disagree with her metaphor? Explain your reasoning. I feel that it can be considered insensitive to set evidenced-based practice over cultural beliefs to a certain extent. Doctors are thought and encouraged to practice and provide care based on evidence- based medicine also know as patient-centered care. Evidenced-based medicine can become challenging when trying to incorporate the patient’s cultural beliefs when it comes to providing care. The ultimate goal of evidence-based medicine is to improve the quality of care by standardizing Medicare care. I also feel that it is important for providers and health care professionals to understand the cultural competency in medicine when providing evidence-based medicine. The provider souls respect the patient’s health beliefs and values. It would be considered immoral and insensitive if a provider did not take cultural beliefs into consideration when setting an evidence-based treatment plan for their patients. (Karlstadt, 2019) An example of a cultural health belief is in some cultures, people believe that talking about a possible health outcome that it will cause the outcome to occur. (Consider Culture: Tool 10, 2024) In an instance like this how should the provider response their patient in an evidence-based way while respecting their belief? I agree with Fadiman’s comparison because it was obvious, she was having trouble understanding the Lee Family. I believe she was just trying to explain the differences between the Hmong Culture and the American Culture. Calling it a puzzle was just demonstrating that there are so many different aspects to consider in delivering the patient care all while respecting the family’s believe but in the end it will come together.
