What is MPI?
A master patient index (MPI), also known as a master person index (MPI), is a database
that connects a patient's medical record number to common identity data elements.
The master patient index (MPI) is used for administrative purposes, continuity of care or
continuum of care, and externally. The MPI serves as a database for the health care company and
enables for the creation of a range of reports that may be utilized as business planning and
marketing tools. This notifies the physician to request that previous patient records be forwarded
to the inpatient unit, emergency department, outpatient clinic, and other departments. The study
of past information enables the practitioner to treat the patient most effectively.
A healthcare facility's MPI may have a different format or content, at the very least the
MPI will include the following data elements: medical record number, name of the resident, date
of birth, gender, address, aliases, and prior name, social security number, date(s) of
admission/readmission, the date(s) of discharge/transfer and the disposition of the resident (the
planned care environment after discharge, or the person's death).
There are specific disadvantages to using the MPI, especially with duplicates, overlaps,
and overlays. When a patient's information is entered several times, multiple medical record
numbers are generated for the same patient. Overlaps happen when two or more patient records
have information that is similar or identical but does not match perfectly. Overlays occur when
two or more patient records are integrated into one, causing vital information to be lost. These
difficulties can result in medical mistakes, inappropriate therapies, and poor patient outcomes.

Maintaining the MPI's integrity requires ensuring that information is submitted by a single
department with responsibility over the assignment of medical record numbers, as well as
conducting data quality checks and validation processes. It is critical not to create duplicate
records. Information should be submitted into the MPI by a single department with authority
over the assignment of medical record numbers.
