The MA114 Mod 4 Admin Proficiency Sheet is used to document completed proficiencies; be sure that all documentation is complete on this sheet for all proficiencies in the course. Once completed and uploaded to Canvas, the MA114 Mod 4 Admin Proficiency Sheet becomes a permanent part of t
he student’s academic file
. In Canvas the instructor types in their name and date and marks complete or incomplete in the assessment box. The instructor will also record proficiency on the grade sheet indicating 100/Pass and Leave Blank/Fail as well as in CampusVue. Various SimChart cases will be used in Mods 1-5. If not already familiar with the use of these web-based simulated cases, utilize the training for SimChart provided in the Canvas MA instructor course on your Canvas dashboard.
The SimChart course is embedded in the Module 4 Canvas course; the instructor DOES NOT need an access code. If the instructor does not already have an Elsevier account, one can be created at www.elsevier.evolve.com
. Unit 1 of the SimChart workbook is used as a reference when utilizing these simulated cases; this unit provides extensive information in utilizing this program. Impress upon students how important this practice with SimChart can be as an opportunity that may present itself as a medical assistant is that of a Medical Scribe. The need for accurate and proficient documentation within the EHR is a necessary skill. The role of the Medical Scribe is as a personal assistant to the provider by performing documentation in the EHR, preparing for the patient visit and partnering with the physician to provide efficient high quality care. This can offer one-on-one collaboration with the physician. Even though the students will work in another vendor’s product when in the fiel
d, the skills learned using SimChart can be applied to any other practice management and electronic health record system. Explain to students that it is like driving a car. Even though you might learn to drive in a Ford, you can apply those same skills to a Buick, Honda, etc. Ross Edge Career TEAM, LLC Web-Based Student Success and Professional Development and eWorkbook Student Success Section 8 “Responsible Budgeting and Borrowing”

of 29 Revised April 2023 General Faculty Information: Instructor and students will initially register at www.rossedge.com using their Ross email and create a password, which they will use for subsequent log in. The Workbook used within Ross Edge when online can also be downloaded as a PDF to a device to view offline. There is a link at the top of the webpage for “PDF Workbook.” Highlighting cannot be performed in the online workbook but can in the PDF file when downloaded. It is important that only the sections indicated here are used as Ross Edge will be instituted throughout the program, specific to each module. **Provide students time each day to electronically document procedures performed on the clinic side. Student should have themselves entered in as a patient in the SimChart playground.
Regularly remind students to read chapters covered this module as less traditional lecture will be used during class time and more time will be spent on skills/competencies (proficiencies) to provide a more active learning environment (FYI: See details in upcoming Instructor Notes on page titled “Curriculum Presentation and Classroom Management.”) Encourage students to use their MA Fundamentals text resources (once registered as noted above, encourage students to also access these on their own; includes an eBook, adaptive learning and games that students may wish to utilize for reading). of 29 Revised April 2023 Notes for Instructor Layout of Sessions –
2.25 hrs = 2 ¼ hours; each session is 2 ¼ hours long less 5 minutes for break from each of the two sessions. Breaks are planned to be 10 minutes total in length.
Course contact hours are listed at the beginning of the lesson plan as well as on the course syllabus. IMPORTANT!
Online instructors: Online due dates –
in order to track attendance make sure there is a submission assignment/discussion due online for the days students are not attending class on-ground.
On ground session in the Canvas shell will remain unpublished until that day in class begins. Instructors must publish the day for students to have aces to that days assignments.
Do not unpublish individual assignments as that will also unpublish them in the online weeks section of the course.
A test password will be given out on the day of the test to students.
Online students will also be provided with a new password by the online instructor when it is time to take the test.
Each instructor will date their lesson plans accordingly in order to provide students with test dates, ROW due dates, etc. to record on their calendar; no printed calendar will be provided to students.
Instructors will review the next session at the end of each class period.
ROW Assignments are as noted on the upcoming page; In Canvas students will have access to all of the ROW assignments on Day 1; however, students should be instructed to read each chapter prior to its coverage in class.
Make sure students are very clear on the due dates (encourage students to record dates on a calendar) and that the assignment must be completed outside of class; follow grading guidelines for ROW; review assignment as necessary.
Instructor must first publish file, website etc. for students to see and access in Canvas
If a graded assignment is unpublished it will be removed from the gradebook.
Sherpath lessons can be very useful as they walk students through the chapter and include helpful pop-ups and micro-quizzes. Sherpath also has test prep exercises which rotate chapter questions until the student masters the subject. These resources are ungraded. Students can also access Sherpath outside of class with an internet connection. Sherpath will remember where the student left off which allows students to come and go throughout the lesson/prep as desired. All Sherpath resources are available upon the first day of class for students to use during the entire module. Encourage students to use the Sherpath program each day.
Help students enter themselves as a patient in their SimChart Playground. Instruct them to use fictional information to protect their personal information. They must always choose “Return to previous session with saved patient information” when prompted. They will use this to electronically document vital signs and procedures during this module. A fictional patient can also be created in the playground and used for documentation practice. Coordinate with the clinic instructor to provide time each day for documentation practice.

of 29 Revised April 2023 Simchart Grading
is as follows, unless otherwise specified in lesson plans.
Per the lesson plans for completion of graded Case Assignments, students will work at their own pace for a given amount of time, and the highest graded assignment is entered in Canvas for that day regardless of whether the student completes all cases for the day or only a portion of the assignments as long as the student works in SimChart for the entire time provided by the instructor.
No grades are generated when practicing in the Simulation Playground as indicated in the lesson plans (DO NOT skip this practice; this repetition is valuable to the learning process).
The recommendation provided by Evolve SimChart will be used to determine grades; the simulation weights 90% and quiz portion of the assignment weights 10% of the grade. o
The SimChart platform automatically grades the quiz when the students click the button “Submit Assignment,” and the instructor can obtain these grades in the Grading Tab of SimChart for each case quiz completed. o
Directions for accessing the answer key for these quizzes can be obtained in the Instructor Resources in the Evolve course to utilize as a resource to introduce each case and information on the quiz (these are not copied for students). o
Instructors will work through the simulation so that they can facilitate their completion by students during class; the simulation grading key is found in the Grading tab; determine simulation grade based on the following:
100% - no errors/ missing information in simulation
90% - 1-2 errors/missing information in simulation
80% - 3-5 errors/missing information in simulation
70% - 6-9 errors/missing information in simulation
60% - 10 or more errors/missing information in simulation
Once simulations are graded and the quiz grades are obtained, utilize the following formula example to determine the highest graded case for the day to enter in the Canvas course; example for a student whose simulation grade is 90 and quiz grade is 68: o
90 x 0.9 (represents 90% weight) = 81 o
68 x 0.1 (represents 10% weight) = 6.8 o
81 + 6.8 = 87.80 entered on Excel grade sheet for Mandatory SimChart Case as applicable for any given course
Once the simulation with the highest grade is determined, this information can be recorded in each student’s SimChart assignment in the Grading tab. The grade will be entered into Canvas; the case used for the highest grade will be typed into the comments box of the Canvas speedgrader for reference and audit purposes.
Students are required to complete all course related SimChart cases. Near the end of each course a Casework Documentation Assignment will record a prorated SimChart case completion grade. o
Students can be required to include screenshots of each case to prove their work. o
Students screenshots showing only grades indicate the student completed the post case quiz and may not have worked on the case steps.
Step by Step directions with Screenshots and videos can be found on the MA Instructor training and curriculum courses.

of 29 Revised April 2023 Administrative Core Skills: Practice Management and EHR: The SimChart for the Medical Office, access through Elsevier account, can be used for practice at any time utilizing the “Simulation Playground” and workbook that will not be graded.
Use of Office Equipment: There will be proficiencies in Mod 6 to include use of the copier, fax, email and the virtual library; these skills should be practiced whenever time permits throughout the program. Telephone Skills
: (practice on a daily or weekly basis, i.e. 10 minutes at the beginning of class); be sure to check out the telephones for role play use; return to location after use as these phones are shared by all programs. Suggested Activity: Create a basket of scenarios that may occur when answering the telephone in the office. Allow students to randomly choose a scenario and role play the reaction to the scenario. Discuss as a class the role play and determine the best way to handle the specific situation. Another option is to place students in teams to write a script of a telephone call from a patient and then use the script to practice telephone skills. Use of Excel: Excel is used in various areas in the curriculum and instructors are also encouraged to include the use of Excel when time permits, for example, to create a terminology chart or inventory. Instructors who are not already familiar with the use of Excel should use the following links for free training provided by Microsoft: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/basic-tasks-in-excel-2010-HA101829993.aspx http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/training-courses-for-excel-2010-HA104039038.aspx **

Mod 4 Administrative Lesson Plans Page 9
of 29 Revised April 2023 Curriculum Presentation and Classroom Management:
The instructor is to remind students to read the chapter to be covered in the next class session to prepare to discuss the content in the classroom setting.
The focus for the classroom is geared towards competencies so that students are more active and involved in their education; the hours listed under each course in the lesson plans are to be used as framework with the understanding that every session will not fit exactly into this timeframe.
The focus is to move away from the “traditional type of lecture” and move towards more technology, demonstration and practice of skills and allowing students to practice and perfect critical thinking skills with group discussion and teamwork.
As indicated in the lesson plans, the time spent in a course will be largely technology driven including active learning and student centered to include the patient education component. PowerPoint (PPT) presentations (other than approved PPT’s on the curriculum website) should not be used as online lessons which cover the topics are required in the lesson plan.
Some proficiencies (Procedures as noted on the upcoming page) will be completed as repetitive role play with feedback provided by the remainder of the class and the instructor; and some proficiencies will be completed as part of an ICA. All proficiency documentation will be uploaded to Canvas.
It is encouraged that the classroom be set up like the office or facility with students completing proficiencies in stations as part of their “office” tasks for the day.
The instructor will present or lecture for no more than 15-20 minutes and then incorporate an activity or procedure practice; use of a “topic starter” or “icebreaker” to introduce content is encouraged.
Movies cannot be shown in the classroom as this infringes upon copyright laws in the for-profit educational setting; however, appropriate, brief, educational videos from You Tube, etc. can be incorporated where applicable; the instructor must view and be prepared for presenting the video prior to the students viewing in class. Suggestions provided in the lesson plans have been viewed and have been deemed appropriate and relevant to the content.
As time permits, stud
ents are to be encouraged to use the publisher’s student resources as an ongoing review of content; these provide an opportunity for certification preparation throughout the program.
The Typing.com website can be used throughout the program to allow students an opportunity to continually become more proficient and efficient in their data entry skills; with advances in use of technology throughout the facility setting, all students will benefit from this practice.
Be sure that students use proper hand positioning on the keyboard rather than the “hunt and peck” or “texting” method of typing; utilize the Typing.com program for those students who need this direction.

When planning your day based on these lesson plans, the use of Bloom’s Taxonomy is a helpful tool to understand when the most effective learning takes place, moving from the lower levels to the higher levels of the pyramid below.
All levels have a purpose; however, when higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy are achieved, learning outcomes are improved; using the examples below, adapt content covered in these lesson plans to utilize this method.
Remembering is achieved in the process of citing, defining, listing, naming, recalling and stating something; this is effective for short term memory. o
i.e. state the effects of stress
Understanding or making sense out of something is achieved by describing, explaining, identifying and summarizing. o
i.e. describe the difference between good and bad stress
Applying or using information in a new but similar way is achieved in the process of demonstrating, illustrating, interpreting and solving. o
i.e. demonstrate the effects of good and bad stress
Analyzing or taking apart and exploring information is achieved in the process of comparing, contrasting, distinguishing and examining. o
i.e. contrast and compare different responses to stress
Evaluating or critically examining and making a determination are achieved in the process of appraising, judging, supporting and valuing. o
i.e. support why each person can have a different response to the same stress
Creating something new from the information is achieved in the process of assembling, constructing, creating and developing. o
i.e. develop a role play scenario to demonstrate the differences. The original Bloom’s Taxonomy created by Benjamin Bloom in 1956 was revised in 2001 by a team of cognitive psychologists, led by Lorin Anderson, a former student of Bloom’s and reflects 21
st
century work.

of 29 Revised April 2023 Program Assessment “A Day in the Office”:
Program Assessment MUST be completed on the last day of the module after all other objectives for the day have been accomplished. At least one scenario must be completed on each side, Admin and Clinic. Even if there are no seniors in any given module, “A Day in the Office” is conducted to provide consistency and practice. Instructors will coordinate completion of the “MA Program Assessment” document. The program assessment document is located on Google Drive. If you do not have access to this document, please contact your program chair. All students should participate in tasks; however, only senior results are recorded on the “MA Program Assessment” document. These “tasks” are not graded but rather give all students a chance to practice and review skil
ls and/or proficiencies. Record senior results as ‘Limited,’ ‘Acceptable,’ or ‘Proficient’ as listed on the “Program Assessment” document.
SimChart will be used for patient information and documentation in the Progress Note, etc. as applicable.
There is no set number of “Day in the Office” scenarios that must be completed; however, since program assessment has a dual purpose (to assess the program as well as provide students with a “Day in the Office”), several scenarios can be occurring simultaneously just as they would be in an actual facility setting.
When applicable (although not always possible with afternoon and evening sessions), the senior students will move between the Admin and Clinic classrooms, depending on which “Day in the Office” scenarios are performed as coordinated by the administrative and clinic instructors.
Scenarios are meant to provide students with “real office” experience and should be operated with a front office/reception area, exam rooms and lab area, using leftover clinic supplies.
Senior students will be utilized as medical assistants first and the rest of the class as patients; however, if you have a small class, students who are proficient in the skills being performed can also be utilized as medical assistants.
If you have students who have not completed their module-specific proficiencies, include those students as medical assistants in the scenarios and be sure to assign them tasks that will accomplish the proficiencies needed.
During registration/patient i
ntake, a new EHR can be created or the student’s current EHR can be utilized in this process and updated at that time using SimChart or Synapse.
If you have a small class of seniors (2 or 3) you can also choose to have each senior take a scenario and complete each patient from registration to check out.
During Program Assessment, senior students will sign into their Canvas course (Practice Exams under Student Resources) and take one of the RMA practice exams; the score will be recorded after the name on the Program Assessment document.

www.coolmath-games.com www.khanacademy.org/math Demonstrate and allow students time to try out the desktop computer calculator. Click Start on bottom left of screen, choose Programs from the menu. Then choose Accessories and then choose Calculator (which will appear on the screen). Have students practice with this calculator. Suggested Activity: Have each student write down a five-digit number on a sticky note and keep it secret from the rest of the class. With each student at a computer using the calculator, have each student enter any two-digit number into the calculator. Going around the room, each student states a function and a one or two digit number with each student performing that function with that number on the calculator at their computer (i.e. one student has 23 on the calculator and the first student says minus 4; all students perform that function on the calculator; in this case, this student should come up with 19). Continue around the room with each student stating a function and a one or two-digit number. The object is not to go over the five-
digit number each student wrote on their sticky note initially. If a student goes over their number, they are out of the game. The game continues around the room until one person is left as the “Calculator Champion.”
