FNP 590 discussion week 7
Complementary medicine is the practice of combining other therapeutic practices with
standard medicine. Complementary medicine is not commonly used in Western hospitals. A
complementary therapy would be using acupuncture or aromatherapy to help reduce a patient's
pain after surgery. Alternative medicine is used in place of proven medical treatments (Bonvin,
2022). A doctor-recommended alternative therapy is the use of a special diet to treat cancer as an
alternative to radiation or chemotherapy. Complementary medicine differs from alternative
medicine. Complementary medicine is used alongside traditional medicine, whereas alternative
medicine is used instead of proven medical practices (Bonvin, 2022). Friends, family, or
advertising may persuade patients to try complementary or alternative medicine. Patients'
decisions may be influenced by personal reasons or the desire to have more control.
Unfortunately, decisions made in the absence of knowledge or professional advice may result in
ineffective or harmful outcomes (Bonvin, 2022). Many of these therapies interact with standard
medications or treatments, and many more endanger the patient's health. Knowing that
complementary medicine may result in interactions and side effects, it is critical for patients to
disclose their use of complementary medicine to their physician, and for professionals to be able
to adequately inform patients (Aveni et al., 2017). If we are to promote complementary and
alternative medicine for patients, nurse practitioners must understand all aspects of it, including
costs, patient knowledge, risks and contraindications, and drug interactions. Nurse practitioners
must assess the patient's understanding of the distinction between OTC drugs and food
supplements that are not regulated by the FDA, such as herbal tablets or capsules. Inform
patients about the possibility of fraudulent advertising (Aveni et al., 2017). Finally, encourage
patients to inform their providers about any supplements they are taking.

Thank you for your insightful post. It is a very good post, Michelle. Modern and alternative
medicine takes a holistic approach to managing many disease processes and promoting health.
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) refers to a group of medical and healthcare
practices and products that are not included in conventional medicine due to a lack of evidence
of their safety and efficacy (Su, 2021). Alternative medicine is becoming more popular in the
United States, particularly among patients suffering from chronic diseases such as cancer.
Alternative healing methods are very common in various cultures, particularly in Hispanic
cultures. Acupuncture is one alternative method that patients use. Acupuncture has been shown
to have physiologic analgesic effects in patients with stable angina. says DeVon (2020). Despite
its lack of popularity in the Hispanic culture, acupuncture is recommended as a modern treatment
for many Cardiac conditions. It has also been shown to help many adults manage their pain.

Hi Kinda, thank you so much share your post. Complementary and alternative medicine
therapy is becoming more prevalent in healthcare. With widespread internet access, more people
are conducting in-depth research on various approaches to improving their overall health.
Complementary and alternative medicine is frequently used when patients do not receive
adequate relief from Western medicine. Herbs, vitamins, minerals, and probiotics are examples
of complementary and alternative medicine treatments, medical practices, and products (Berretta
et al., 2017). Many people who suffer from chronic pain or terminal illnesses like cancer are
more likely to use a combination of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments.
Over half of the cancer patients use complementary and alternative medicine (Beretta et al.,
2017). As complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies become more common in
patient's treatment plans, advanced practice registered nurses must be aware of potential
complications and side effects. To work toward an integrated model of health treatments, an
education plan about the potential benefits of therapies as well as their effectiveness, using
trained providers, proper product sourcing, and ideal research should be completed (Beretta et
al., 2017). It is ideal for the patient's overall health to have complete understanding and
commitment from both the patient and the provider.
