Why are those kids full of cavities?
By: Scott Curdie
1. What are the social determinants of health identified in the article as contributing to
cavities in Latino preschool children in this area of rural California? (point form or list is
fine)
-
Education as the children do not know how to properly take care of their teeth
-
Income as a lot of the latino communities lack the transportation, and the health
insurance to be able to visit the dentist consistently to care for their teeth
-
Access to food as these children do not have access to healthy food, and thus have to
eat food that is more damaging towards their teeth
-
Discrimination as the latino children were treated differently in comparison to other
races. Differences could also be due to the lack of language proficiency that many
latino parents have.
-
Location as being in an impoverished environment makes it harder to get to the
dentist for proper appointments
2. How does the culture of dentistry contribute to cavities in Latin preschool children?
The culture in dentistry is similar to the culture in medicine where they treat ethnic minorities
significantly harsher then they would people of similar races to them. The culture of dentistry
includes the ways they conform to the denti-cal regulations, and how they interact with both
the families, and the patients. Since a lot of minorities do not go into the dental profession,
they are more likely to be treated worse than other dentists. Due to the lack of education in a
lot of those families, the kids aren’t educated on how to properly take care of their teeth. The
current culture behind dentistry allows for patients to care for their teeth on their own instead
of actually teaching them how to properly take care of their teeth. This issue could play a
large role in the reasons that latino children have more cavities.
OPTIONAL: Any additional thoughts? (feel free to record these in your submission)
The study given to us talks about how most dentists tend to be white, and also mentions how
white people tend to treat latinos differently. I do not believe that this is going to change if
white people remain a majority of dentists. As a result I believe that if there was a way to
encourage latino children to go into a medical field like dentistry, you would not only create a
safer environment for latinos to go to appointments, but you would be also educating the
latinos on how to properly take care of themselves which would then limit the cavities.
