The efficacy of TCM and Ayurveda
Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicine (TIM) and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)
have
many similarities and
remain the most ancient and still practiced living traditions of medicine.
These
systems of medicine intentionally focus on the patient rather than disease. They also aim
to fundamentally promote health and enhance the quality of a person’s life a natural and holistic
fashion (
Patwardhan,
Warude, Pushpangadan, & Bhatt,
2005).
Ayurveda treatment has been practiced in India more than 3,000 years ago. It encourages certain
lifestyle interventions and natural therapies to regain a balance between the body, mind, spirit,
and the environment. It also
includes three
doshas
:
Vata
,
Pitta,
and
Kapha
. A
person
Vata
dominant has more air and space elements and is considered prone to mood
changes, appetite, and digestive issues. To overcome an excess of
Vata
, the person should
consume warm foods and drinks while managing their emotional well-being through
meditation and relaxing activities like yoga (Johns Hopkins Medicine, n,d,).
TCM originated in China and focuses on correcting imbalances and deficiencies in the body.
TCM
supports the notion that a balanced constitution is key to well-being and has a long
history of usage.
Acupuncture is part of TCM and is one of the oldest and most commonly used
complementary and alternative medical treatments in the world. Although an effective TCM
treatment it may take several visits to see significant improvement of chronic pain conditions (The
ABC’s of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, 2023).
